International Development Research Center
Grants and related support for research in agriculture, environment, and natural resources in the developing world
Principal Office: Canada
Canada’s International Development Research Center (IDRC) helps developing countries use science and technology to find practical and long-term solutions to the social, economic, and environmental problems they face.
IDRC makes grants for applied research by researchers in developing countries and Canada, and it builds capacity in the developing countries for innovative research.
Research themes in IDRC include food and agriculture, environment, and natural resources (among several others).
Grant Programs for Agriculture, Energy, Environment, Natural Resources
1 — Research Grants. IDRC announces calls for research proposals that appear throughout the year. Some calls are for organizations and consortia, while others are for individual researchers.
2 — Fellowships and Awards for Graduate Students. IDRC offers a variety of fellowships, capacity-building programs, and related opportunities for graduate students in Canada and developing countries.
Each type of award has specific eligibility requirements by citizenship, age, and other criteria.
3 — Unsolicited Concept Notes. IDRC accepts short concept notes that identify a research question, that explain its importance and research objectives, that include a budget and timeline, and that offer other supporting details. Ideas must fit IDRC’s research priorities.
