Nippon Foundation — Overseas Grant Programs

The Nippon Foundation makes its overseas grants to nonprofit organizations based outside of Japan. This refers to local, regional, and international NGOs and other nonprofit organizations, including educational and research institutions. Past projects and education/training include examples in small-scale agriculture and natural resources. There is no minimum or maximum grant size. There is no application deadline. United Nations Development Programme — African Young Women Leaders Fellowship Programme

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in partnership with the African Union Commission (AUC), invites applications for the African Young Women Leaders Fellowship Programme. The program aims to train and develop the new generation of young African women leaders and experts in designing and implementing development programs in the context of the SDGs and Agenda 2063. A total of 20 women will be selected for a 12-month assignment with UNDP at Headquarters in New York or in a regional or country office. The fellowship will cover expenses related to travel, medical insurance, accommodation, and living costs. Applicants must be nationals of an AU Member State and be under 34 years old. U.S. Department of State — Global Innovation through Science and Technology

The U.S. Department of State announces the notice of funding opportunity for the Global Innovation through Science and Technology (GIST) initiative. GIST supports projects that strengthen young innovators and entrepreneurs in low and middle income countries by connecting them with American businesses and experts. Proposed projects must address in-country training activities and pitch competitions; interactive online activities; early-stage investment networks; and website maintenance. Funding of US$1 million will be made available. Eligibility is limited to U.S. non-profit organizations and educational institutions. UNESCO — Ethics of Climate Change and Environmental Sustainability

UNESCO seeks nominations for the Avicenna Prize for Ethics in Science 2019 with a special thematic focus on climate change and environmental sustainability. The prize consists of a gold medal, a certificate, and US$50 thousand. The prize may be conferred upon individuals, institutions, other entities or non-governmental organizations. Netherlands Enterprise Agency — Promoting the Agricultural and Fisheries Sector

The Netherlands Enterprise Agency, the SDG Partnership facility (SDGP), and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs aim to help achieve the following sustainable development goals in developing countries. Focus areas under this call include promoting economic growth in the agricultural and fisheries sector through sustainable and climate-resilient food production systems, among others. Applicants can apply for a subsidy of min. €500 thousand and max. €3 million per project. The main applicant has to be a Dutch organization but local partnerships with NGOs, companies, or government agencies are required to be eligible. The deadline for concept notes is 01 October 2019. National Geographic Society — AI for Earth Innovation

In partnership with Microsoft, the National Geographic Society seeks proposals from around the world that focus on the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning to better monitor and manage Earth’s natural systems for a more sustainable future. The grants will support the creation and deployment of open source trained models and algorithms in the focus core areas of climate change, agriculture, and water. National Geographic Society — Biodiversity Exploration and Discovery

The National Geographic Society seeks proposals from around the world to find and describe new species, and better understand the patterns of distribution and abundance of poorly known groups of organisms. Please note that NatGeo requires that any expeditions intending to collect specimens have permissions from and operate under the biodiversity legislation of the host country. Preference will be given to proposals from applicants residing in the country of fieldwork. Projects that include the active involvement of early career conservationists are encouraged. National Geographic Society — Citizen Science for Species Discovery

The National Geographic Society supports projects that leverage the power of crowd-sourced citizen science data collection to help support the discovery of species, bridge biodiversity gaps, and accelerate biodiversity data collection, identification, and classification. Citizen science projects must support citizen scientists to conduct inventories, surveys, research, and/or encourage and train students and other citizens in data collection and fieldwork activities. National Geographic Society — Artificial Intelligence for Species Discovery

The National Geographic Society seeks proposals for artificial intelligence (AI) solutions that support the discovery of new species, bridge biodiversity gaps, and accelerate biodiversity data collection, identification, and classification. Priority will be given to projects that use AI to address challenges in filling biodiversity data gaps, generate data and develop open-source technologies, or use AI and machine learning to process massive and complex datasets. Frida — Climate and Environmental Justice Media Fellowship

In partnership with OpenGlobalRights, FRIDA provides a 5-month training program to young feminists on climate and environmental justice activism and digital journalism. Women between ages of 18 and 30 based anywhere in Sub Saharan Africa, Asia, the MENA region, Latin America, the Caribbean, and Eastern Europe are eligible to apply. Fellows will receive mentorship and are expected to dedicate 4-5 hours per week (total of 15-20 hours per month) from August to December 2019. Applications are submitted through a short Google form.
