European Commission — Microorganism Communities for Plastics Bio-Degradation

The European Commission seeks project proposals that develop environmentally friendly and sustainable solutions for managing the waste of plastics mixtures based on the use of communities of microorganisms. The aim of this call is to develop of new biotechnologies for the global challenge of environmental protection and improve the quality and quantity of products in a wide variety of sectors (wellbeing, environment, food, etc.). Proposals may requests a contribution of up to €5 million. International cooperations and legal entities established in EU Member States, Overseas Countries and Territories and Horizon 2020 associated countries (as detailed in the call) are eligible to apply under this call. Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation — Young People for Development

The Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) seek innovative projects run by young people in the 16–35 age group which aim to improve the living conditions of disadvantaged communities in developing countries. The ‘Together we’re better’ competition sponsors current and planned initiatives run by young people that help advance global sustainable development and fight poverty. Prizes in five categories range from CHF 4 to 10 thousand. European Commission — Ship Emission Control Scenarios

The European Commission seeks project proposals to better understand the comprehensive environmental impacts from the wide scale adoption of a range of potential emission reduction solutions together with any secondary effects on the on the marine environment. The aim of this call is to identify emission reduction scenarios and activities that will provide comprehensive information concerning the predicted dispersion of discharges from shipping and any long term environmental impact. Proposals may requests a contribution of up to €8 million. The European Commission seeks new technologies that can minimize the impact of aviation operations on climate change. The projects under this call are expected to formulate specific recommendations for stakeholders on flight planning and on the use of alternative fuels. Volkswagen Foundation — Funding for Bold Research Ideas

Through its program ‘Experiment!’ the Volkswagen Foundation seeks fundamentally new research topics from all fields of science and engineering as well as in the life sciences. Applicants from all around the world who want to put a potentially transformative and risky research idea to the test are invited to apply. European Commission (Horizon 2020) — Negative Emissions and Land-Use based Mitigation Assessment

The European Commission, under Horizon 2020, launches a call for research and innovation action on negative emissions and land-use based mitigation assessment. Actions should address one of the following sub-topics: Feasibility of negative emissions for climate stabilisation; or Land-based mitigation. Applicants can request a contribution between €5 million and €7 million. International cooperations and legal entities established in EU Member States, Overseas Countries and Territories and Horizon 2020 associated countries (as detailed in the call) are eligible to apply under this call. United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification — “Land for Life” Award 2019

The UNCCD presents the “Land for Life” Award for inspiring efforts in land conservation and management. Eligibility is open to individuals and institutions worldwide that are making a significant and innovative contribution to reduce the impacts of land degradation and desertification. In particular, the focus is on helping communities at risk or forced to abandon their homes due to insecurity deriving from environmental degradation. Award winners will receive a support package from the UNCCD Secretariat to include networking with interested organizations; assistance to promote the winning initiatives nationally and internationally; and opportunities to showcase them at national and international events. National Geographic Society — Science Communication

The National Geographic Society seeks proposals addressing environmental issues by communicating science. The NGS seeks proposals from around the world that advance the science of nature communication by systematically testing visual communication and education methods. The call is intended for visual artists, photographers, and videographers who aim to more effectively create and use images or video to overcome apathy towards species and ecosystems. National Geographic Society — Reducing Marine Plastic Pollution

The National Geographic Society seeks proposals for its program “Reducing Marine Plastic Pollution” from all around the world. The aim is to explore solutions to reduce marine plastic pollution (including behavior change). Projects may be focused around conservation, education, research, storytelling, or technology. Preference will be given to applicants who are residents or citizens of the country of fieldwork as well as to projects with strong local capacity development components. The National Geographic Society seeks proposals from around the world that will advance innovative conservation technologies to explore, visualize, and protect the planet. Priority will be given to projects that use multi-sensor monitoring systems, advance surveillance/alarm systems for protected areas, or develop new tools and capabilities needed to generate data.
