Institute for Global Environmental Strategies — Satoyama Development Mechanism 2023

The Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES), the United Nations University Institute for Advanced Studies on Sustainability, and Japan’s Ministry of the Environment announce the latest round of sub-grants under the Satoyama Development Mechanism. The International Partnership for the Satoyama Initiative (IPSI) promotes the sustainable use of Socio-Ecological Production Landscapes and Seascapes. Grants are up to US$20 thousand for field projects; research; collaboration activities; and capacity building and outreach that link ecosystems and community systems on a sustainable basis. European Commission — Sustainable Development of the Prespa Lake Area

The European Commission (EC) aims to support eco-friendly socio-economic development in the Prespa Lake Area (North Macedonia). The priorities of this call for proposal are: sustainable eco-friendly tourism and improving cross-border exchanges and cooperation with Albania and Greece for the preservation of the area. Applicants may request between €150 thousand to €400 thousand in project funding. Eligibility extends to non-profit organizations. The deadline for submission of concept notes is 15 August 2023. Beyond the Grid Fund for Africa — Off-Grid Energy

Beyond the Grid Fund for Africa (BGFA) aims to incentivize private off-grid energy service companies to scale up their innovative sustainable businesses and accelerate access to affordable and clean off-grid energy in Mozambique. The BGFA invites off-grid energy companies to submit proposals for clean and affordable energy solutions in peri-urban and rural areas. Grants are expected to be between €2 million and €2.5 million, depending on the country. The application process is divided into two stages: (1) Pre-Qualification and (2) Final Application. Reversing Environmental Degradation in Africa and Asia — Project Grants

REDAA invites proposals for locally led initiatives to improve evidence, tools, and governance that can help people and nature thrive together in Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia and Southeast Asia. Successful proposals will receive medium-scale grants between £200 thousand and £500 thousand for research-to-action initiatives lasting two to four years. Applications close 31 July 2023. Turing Foundation — Grants for Marine Ecosystems and Sustainable Land Use

The Foundation’s interests include marine ecosystems and protected areas, along with projects promoting sustainable agriculture and land use. Projects in marine conservation focus heavily on the Asia-Pacific Coral Triangle, but also include marine protected areas in Sub-Saharan Africa. The Foundation’s funding for sustainable land use is oriented mainly towards West Africa. Most grants are to Dutch and international organizations that work with local partners. Turing does not accept unsolicited applications, but it invites brief project summaries. More information

Jephcott Charitable Trust — Program in Natural Environment

The Jephcott Charitable Trust in the UK makes grants for charitable purposes in the subject areas of population control, natural environment, education, and health. Projects in the theme of Natural Environment include examples in small-scale agriculture, livestock production, horticulture, agricultural training, community water supply, environmental education, tree planting, renewable energy, and others. Grants are made in the range of £2 thousand to £10 thousand (in exceptional cases only, up to £20 thousand). BirdLife International — Conservation of Natural Grasslands

The BirdLife in the Americas seeks proposals for the conservation and research of natural grasslands and their birds in the region. The “Small Grants for Grassland Conservation” are aimed at individuals working or conducting research in grassland conservation. The prioritized countries for this call are Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Paraguay, and Uruguay. Applicants may request up to US$12 thousand in funding for their project. Auckland Zoo — Small Grants Program

The Auckland Zoo’s Conservation Fund provides funding for ongoing projects or pilot programs with clear conservation value. The current round of funding will concentrate on innovative projects in Africa focusing on mitigating human-wildlife conflict that have tangible conservation outcomes for threatened wildlife. Grants are up to a maximum of NZD$5 thousand, but most grants are smaller. The application must represent a minimum of 25% of the project’s overall budget. Applications close on 30 June 2023. UK Government — Darwin Initiative: Main Projects

The Darwin Initiative funds capacity building, training, research, and education in support of the major conventions on biodiversity — focusing on the developing world. The program invites applications for main projects, partnership projects, and fellowships. Applicant organizations can be based in any country. Projects must benefit biodiversity and local communities in developing countries. Darwin projects should be a minimum of £100 thousand and no more than £600 thousand.
