AuthorAID announces its first round of small grants in 2017 to support researchers in developing countries with travel and workshops. In this first round for 2017, AuthorAID plans to award five travel grants (US$1,500 each) and five workshop grants (US$2,500 each). AuthorAID posts the list of eligible developing countries. Earth Journalism Network — Grants for Stories on Biodiversity
The Earth Journalism Network is offering a second round of reporting grants to support the production of in-depth stories that highlight previously untold threats to global biodiversity, or explore new conservation-based solutions. Preference is for proposals that focus on new topics or stories that have not been widely covered. Eligibility for funding extends to journalists (online, print, television) and other expert media practitioners with a track record of reporting on environmental issues. Most grants will range from US$1 thousand to US$2 thousand, although larger grants can be considered if submitted by media partnerships. The deadline for applications is 17 February 2017. Link
Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture — Doctoral Studies in Agriculture and Food Science for Africans
The Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture (RUFORUM) announces PhD scholarships available through the German Academic Exchange Services (DAAD) for doctoral studies at three universities in East Africa. They are the Nelson Mandela African Institution of Sciences and Technology (Tanzania); Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (Kenya); and Makerere University (Uganda). The relevant doctoral programs are identified in the announcement. Scholarships are available for in-country applicants, as well as for regional (all Sub-Saharan) applicants. Indo-US Science and Technology Forum — SERB Indo-US Postdoctoral Fellowships for Indian Researchers
The IUSSTF invites Indian applicants to apply for the SERB Indo-US Postdoctoral Fellowships. The objective is to introduce Indian scientists and engineers in the early stages of their careers to international collaborative research opportunities. These awards will enable young Indian scientists and technologists of all disciplines, under the age of 35, to interact with the U.S scientific community. Belmont Forum and START — Support for Africans in the Sustainable Urbanization Global Initiative
The Belmont Forum and START announce an opportunity for African scientists to participate in the Belmont Forum Collaborative Research Action on “Sustainable Urban Global Initiative: Food-Water-Energy Nexus.” Principal Investigators and co-PIs should be African nationals based at African institutions. Proposals should include PIs or co-PIs from at least three countries, combining African countries with countries in the Belmont Forum. Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture — Agricultural Scholarships for Africa
The Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture (RUFORUM) is partnering with the MasterCard Foundation, Gulu University, and Egerton University to enhance the application of science, technology, business, and innovation for rural agriculture. Students who are economically disadvantaged, and students from post-conflict and conflict-affected areas of Africa, are welcome to apply for admission and financial support at Gulu University (Uganda) or Egerton University (Kenya). European Energy Community — Summer School 2017
The Energy Community aims to extend the EU internal energy market to South East Europe and beyond. The Secretariat of the Energy Community announces the 2nd Energy Community Summer School that will take place in FYR of Macedonia in August-September 2017. The Secretariat welcomes applications from postgraduate students, researchers in energy-related disciplines, and young professionals from government institutions, companies, think tanks, and NGOs in the region of the Energy Community. The non-EU members of the Energy Community include Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Kosovo, FYR of Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Serbia, Ukraine, and Turkey. Participation is free, including tuition and accommodation costs. However, travel costs are borne by the participants. The application deadline is 31 March 2017. Link
U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service — Conservation of African Rhinos 2017
As part of its program “Wildlife Without Borders,” the USFWS makes grants for the conservation of selected wildlife species, including rhinos and tigers. The current call is for proposals to identify immediate threats to rhino survival in Africa, and to support direct conservation activities to eliminate or reduce those threats. If the project includes research, the applicant must provide a convincing argument that the research addresses priority threats, and that the results are likely to result in management actions. Proposals are invited from any organization responsible for the conservation and protection of rhinos in the wild and any other organization, multi-national secretariat, public or private university, or individual with demonstrated experience in rhino conservation. Grants will range from US$10 thousand to US$200 thousand. The application deadline is 05 April 2017. Link
Masdar Institute — Graduate Studies in Sustainable Environment and Energy
The Masdar Institute in Abu Dhabi provides graduate-level education and research to produce future world leaders and critical thinkers in advanced energy and sustainability. The Institute offers four types of scholarships, including the IRENA scholarship for aspiring master’s students with a desire to work in the field of renewable energy. Up to 20 applicants are awarded this scholarship at Masdar Institute every year, with support from the Government of the United Arab Emirates. Scholarship students may study in any one of the nine master’s degree programs offered at Masdar Institute. The application deadline is 31 May 2017. Link
Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture — Field Attachment Program Award
The RUFORUM Field Attachment Program Award is a graduate student internship to link thesis research to application and use at the community level. The awards are for MSc students supported by RUFORUM, and who are finalizing their degrees. The grant provides a living stipend and limited travel for three to four months.
