The project “Schreiben über Wissenschaft” (translation: Writing about Science) is a cooperation between the Goethe-Institut and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). The goal is to foster the relationship between the sciences on the one side and journalism on the other, in order to support the transfer of knowledge to a broader public. The workshop will take place 30 September to 02 October near Cairo, and is open to science journalists interested in writing about scientific topics. World Academy of Sciences — Postgraduate Fellowships in Natural Sciences in Pakistan
The TWAS-CIIT Fellowship Programme offers fellowships to young scientists from developing countries who wish to obtain all or part of their PhD in natural sciences. CIIT will provide a monthly stipend which should be used to cover living costs such as food, accommodation, and health insurance. Mission Innovation — Off-Grid Access to Electricity in India
The Off-Grid Access to Electricity Innovation Challenge will financially support studies, research, standards, capacity building, and technical assistance to improve affordable energy access for individuals and communities in India with no or limited access to grid connected power. Proposals are invited from qualified researchers and professionals in regular position at Indian institutions drawn from Indian academic and publicly-funded R&D laboratories. U.S. Agency for International Development — Geospatial Data for the Amazon Region
The program SERVIR helps developing countries to integrate Earth observation information and geospatial technologies into development decision-making. The U.S. government will support a regional system or hub in the Amazon region for dissemination and use of publicly available data on precipitation and hydrologic monitoring and modeling. Related objectives are to strengthen the region’s capacity to generate, disseminate, and use geospatial information and tools for decision support; and to develop user-tailored tools to inform government and civil society decision making. Eligibility for funding is restricted to organizations based in the Amazon Region. Applying consortia should include a mix of inter-governmental, NGO, academic institutions, and private partners. Partners should include representation from Brazil, Colombia, and Peru — with additional desirable participation from Guyana and Suriname, and possibly other Amazon countries. USAID anticipates making one award of US$7 million to US$9 million for implementation over five years. The closing date for applications is 31 August 2017. Link
Global Partnership for Sustainable Development Data — Data for Development Projects, 2nd Round
The GPSDD seeks innovative proposals for data production, dissemination, and use. This year’s call is anchored around two themes: “Leave No One Behind,” and the Environment. The focus in Environment is to bring together new sources of data (big data, geospatial and earth observation, citizen-generated, IoT, and open data) to support environmental challenges related to climate change and urban resilience. Smaller amounts of funding (starting at US$25 thousand) are made for riskier, unproven innovations at the pilot stage. Larger amounts of funding (up to US$250 thousand) will be awarded to proposals which have a clear justification. The pilot funding round will close on 01 September 2017. Link
Human Development Innovation Fund — Water, Sanitation and Hygiene in Tanzania
The Human Development Innovation Fund seeks to fund innovative projects in water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) in Tanzania. Projects should increase demand, uptake and sustainability of improved sanitation facilities through innovative financing mechanisms, technology, and behavior change promotion. The lead applicant should be an organization based in Tanzania. Support for pilot and scale-up projects is between £500 thousand and £1 million. The application deadline is 08 September 2017. Link

The Netherlands Enterprise Agency manages the Sustainable Water Fund (FDW) as a public-private partnership for water safety and water security in developing countries. Projects are collective initiatives between governmental bodies, industries, and NGOs. The thematic areas are improved access to drinking water and sanitation (including solid waste); efficient and sustainable water use, particularly for agriculture; and safe deltas and improved basin management.
