Global Youth Climate Action Fund — Microgrants 2023

The Global Youth Climate Action Fund (GYCAF) makes microgrants to finance youth-led climate action in communities vulnerable to the effects of climate change. Focus areas include smart agriculture to ensure food sustainability, clean energy for local communities, protecting marine life and mitigating climate catastrophes, and biodiversity conservation. Grants range from US$500 to US$1000. The fund targets youth-led organizations and networks seeking funding for their projects and businesses. The application deadline is 16 June 2023. BirdLife International — Conservation of Natural Grasslands

The BirdLife in the Americas seeks proposals for the conservation and research of natural grasslands and their birds in the region. The “Small Grants for Grassland Conservation” are aimed at individuals working or conducting research in grassland conservation. The prioritized countries for this call are Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Paraguay, and Uruguay. Applicants may request up to US$12 thousand in funding for their project. University of the Sunshine Coast — PhD Scholarships in Tropical Forest Restoration

The University of the Sunshine Coast offers five PhD scholarships for projects related to restoration of degraded tropical forest landscapes. Graduate students will undertake their research as part of a large reforestation project working with communities to restore degraded landscapes in the Philippines. Applicants must be based in Australia or willing to relocate to Australia. The scholarship includes a monthly salary, tuition of 3 years and an allowance for relocation. Open Society Foundations — Course in Climate Justice

The Island Innovation Caribbean Climate Justice Leaders Academy is open for applications. The interactive course will run from mid-July 2023 to January 2024. The program aims to build the capacity of young professionals, eligible students, and young community leaders working in the Caribbean region. Participants will receive expert training and capacity building through online training sessions from climate experts. Five participants will be able to travel to the 2023 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) in Dubai. The application deadline is 30 June 2023. Details here

Earth Journalism Network — Reporting on Air Pollution

The Earth Journalism Network (EJN) invites journalists from Nairobi (Kenya) to apply for a story grant to report on air pollution in the city. Journalists are encouraged to examine the key sources of air pollution in Nairobi and its impacts on the local environment, economy and health, among other topics. OpenIDEO — Climate Resiliency Challenge

The Climate Resiliency Challenge seeks organizations and teams across the globe to develop solutions that will empower frontline communities to be ready and resilient against disasters caused by climate change – in particular, wildfires, floods, and extreme weather. Winners will receive prizes ranging from US$50 thousand to US$200 thousand. The challenge is open to individuals, teams of individuals, and legal entities. Deadline for submissions is 10 July 2023. Robert Bosch Foundation — Africa Science Leadership Program

The Africa Science Leadership Programme (ASLP) seeks to identify and select leading African researchers in basic and applied science, engineering, among others. (Note: This may include one or more relevant categories of the Terra Viva Grants Directory.) Participants will receive training in the areas of thought leadership, team management and research development. Most training, travel, meal and accommodation costs will be covered by the program. Technische Universität Dresden — Forest Governance Scholarship for PhD

The Department of Forest Sciences at the Faculty of Environmental Sciences offers a Forest Governance Scholarship for PhD dedicated to research in the field of “Forest Farmers’ Organizations in timber value chains: Financial performance, power, and governance”. Global Centre on Biodiversity for Climate — Grant Program

The Global Centre on Biodiversity for Climate (GCBC) funds research into natural solutions to climate change and poverty. The GCBC makes grants that fund research into how the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity can help address climate change and improve livelihoods of some of the world’s most vulnerable populations. The geographic focus is in Latin America and the Caribbean, Sub-Saharan Africa, Southeast Asia and the Pacific. The application closes 20 July 2023. Climate Grant Program

French Development Agency — Social and Environmental Justice

The Agence Française de Développement (AFD) accepts expressions of interest for research projects that address the contribution for the commons and citizen participation from a social and environmental justice perspective. The budget requested must not exceed €200 thousand per project. The research projects must be carried out in developing countries specified in the announcement. This call is dedicated to teams of researchers and social actors engaged both in the production of new research and in a public policy dialogue. The call is open until 23 July 2023. More here
