The AU-TWAS Young Scientist National Awards are co-sponsored by TWAS and the African Union. Monetary prizes of US$2 thousand are offered to young (not over age 40) African scientists in each of two categories: life and earth sciences; and basic sciences, technology, and innovation. Participating countries are Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Egypt, Ghana, Guinea, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa, Sudan, and Zimbabwe. Energy and Environment Partnership for Southern and East Africa — Project of the Year 2016
The EEP will make an award for “EEP Project of the Year 2016.” Nominations are invited from current or previously completed EEP S&EA projects. EEP will fund travel, accommodation, and associated costs for one representative of the winning project to present at the African Utility Week / Clean Power Africa in Cape Town (May 2017). International Polar Foundation — Baillet Latour Antarctica Fellowship
The Baillet Latour Antarctica Fellowship of €150 thousand over two years provides young scientists with the opportunity to conduct research in East Antarctica. The program is open to young researchers in atmospheric sciences, glaciology, and geosciences and microbiology (excluding marine microbiology). Applications are welcome from doctoral researchers and post-doctoral researchers in any country who have completed their PhD within the past 10 years. The application deadline is 15 September 2016. The DO School — Apprenticeship Challenge
The DO School sponsors and funds the Entrepreneurship for Good Program to build the capacity of social entrepreneurs in strategies and methods of promoting on-the-job learning, e.g., apprenticeships. The Apprenticeship Challenge will accept 20 individuals for a 10-week incubation phase in Brazil, followed by 10 months of implementation in the participants’ home countries. Applications are invited from talented young adults worldwide regardless of their socioeconomic or educational backgrounds whose interests may include green economy, sustainability, international development, etc. The course is subsidized; financial support is offered in relation to the specific needs of each applicant. UK Natural Environment Research Council — Research Workshop on Water Quality in India
NERC and the UK’s Engineering & Physical Sciences Research Council invite applications from UK scientists to attend a workshop organised jointly with India’s Department of Science & Technology on the theme of improved water quality in India. The workshop will be held in Delhi (November 2016) to define the scope of a potential new interdisciplinary research programme by the two countries. Southeast Asian Regional Centre for Tropical Biology — Research Proposals 2017
The Southeast Asian Regional Centre for Tropical Biology (SEAMEO BIOTROP) welcomes research proposals in support of its program “Sustaining and Enhancing the Integrity and Productivity of Ecosystems in Southeast Asia.” The focal areas are ecological restoration, ecological protection and conservation, and ecological sustainability and productivity enhancement. Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund — Conservation in the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu
The CEPF invites proposals for large and small grants (i.e., under US$20 thousand) to conserve biodiversity in the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu. The conservation priorities are stated in the announcement. Eligibility for funding extends to NGOs, community groups, universities, private enterprises, and other applicants from civil society. Michigan State University — Graduate Studies in Meteorology for Mali
With funding from the U.S. government, the Borlaug Higher Education Agricultural Research and Development (BHEARD) Program supports long-term training of agricultural and food security researchers and policy advisors at master’s and doctoral levels. The program currently includes scholarships for staff at selected agricultural and meteorological institutions in Mali to pursue graduate studies in meteorology. Additionally, the program is open to NGO personnel in the Mopti region who are working in subjects of environment and climate. Applications from women candidates are particularly encouraged. France’s IRD is a partner with the Ivory Coast’s Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research in a program of research (PReSeD-CI 2) on natural products, agriculture, energy and minerals, environmental governance, and other themes in support of sustainable development. The Society makes several categories of grants, including the Mewaldt-King grants for research in ornithology and avian biology by university graduate students of any nationality in any country.
