U.S. Department of State — Study/Research Awards 2018

The Study/Research Awards are a component of the Fulbright U.S. Student Program. The program is designed for applicants interested in designing their own projects in various areas of study (possibly within the thematic areas of the Terra Viva Grant Directory). Eligibility is limited to U.S. citizens. Program requirements vary by country, so the applicants should familiarize themselves with the program summary for the host country. Each candidate is required to be affiliated with a local institution of higher education, a research/training institute, a think tank, or a registered NGO.  The deadline for applications is 06 October 2017. More information

Academy of Finland — Development Research

The Academy of Finland and the Finnish Ministry for Foreign Affairs fund problem-oriented and multidisciplinary development research. Themes for the research include food security, biodiversity, environmental health, and natural resources (among others). Projects should be based on problem-based research that is concerned with issues of global development, and that benefit the developing countries. Research teams may apply for a maximum of €600 thousand for four years. The application deadline is 16 October 2017.  Find more information

India Department of Science & Technology  — Indo-Hungarian Joint Research

The Indian Department of Science & Technology (DST) calls for proposals for joint research projects between India and Hungary. Grants are to promote collaborative projects between at least one Indian and one Hungarian scientist. Themes are energy and water; biotechnology; and others.  Proposals must be submitted in English. National Cheng Kung University — Gro Bruntland Awards 2018

Taiwan’s Cheng Kung University will host Gro Bruntland Week in in March 2018 to honor Dr. Gro Harlem Brundtland, former Prime Minister of Norway and Director-General of the World Health Organization. Five young female scientists, one from Taiwan and four from developing countries, will be invited to present their research related to public health and sustainable development. TVG Note: This can possibly include research related to food production and nutrition, water supply, or other environmental influences on health. Governments of Austria and India — Scientific Exchange Visits

Austria’s Federal Ministry of Science, Research and Economy (BMWFW) and India’s Department of Science and Technology (DST) invite applications for fully-funded exchange visits to carry out joint research. The call is open to all scientific disciplines and thematic areas — including environmental sciences, agricultural sciences, and veterinary medicine. Projects will be supported for a maximum of two years. It is up to the applicants to find their own research partners. International Osprey Foundation — Research on Ospreys

The IOF makes small grants for research on ospreys and other raptor species worldwide. Applicants submit a research plan, proposed budget, and information about other sources of funding. Applications should be submitted by postal mail to the address indicated on the website. The application deadline is 31 January 2018. Learn more

Federal Republic of Germany — Small Development Projects in Myanmar

The Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany calls for proposals for small development projects in Myanmar. Projects may fall into the one or more thematic areas of the Terra Viva Grants Directory. Selected organizations will receive funds of up to US$9500 and are expected to maintain the project after completion. Submissions are accepted through the German Embassy in Yangon. Securing Water for Food — Photo Contest

The Securing Water for Food (SWFF) Global Water-Agriculture Photo Contest will call attention to the significant issue of water scarcity, while recognizing and celebrating steps being taken around the world to improve water and food security. The four themes for photos are: agriculture; water; technology related to water-agriculture; and men and women working in agriculture. Cash prizes are up to US$500. Wageningen University — Vegetable Seed in Uganda

Wageningen University, in collaboration with Uganda’s National Agricultural Research Organisation, seeks concept notes to strengthen seed sector development in Uganda, with a focus on vegetable seed. The fund will support four innovation projects, with a grant size €25 to €50 thousand, with an additional 50% matching contribution from the grantee. Applications are invited from domestic and foreign companies in the vegetable sector. Applying companies can partner with research institutes, universities, and NGOs. Asian Cities Climate Change Resilience Network — Climate Change Storytelling Competition

The Asian Cities Climate Change Resilience Network, in partnership with the Thomson Reuters Foundation, announces the ACCCRN Storytelling Competition 2017. The competition invites climate stories about impacts, actions, and innovations under the theme “Beat the Heat: How inclusive cities are coping with rising temperatures”. Shortlisted finalists will be invited to attend an Urban Heat Resilience storytelling workshop from 27-30 November 2017 in Jakarta, Indonesia. The deadline for story submissions is 30 September 2017.
