The Technical Centre for Agricultural and Rural Cooperation (CTA), with the support of the African Development Bank (AfDB) launches the Pitch AgriHack 2018. The theme for this year’s edition is “Women entrepreneurs innovate for agricultural transformation in Africa, the Caribbean and the Pacific”. The competition is open to both male and female founders and co-founders of e-agri startups offering digital services to the agricultural sector. Applicants must be aged between 18 to 35 years and need to be nationals and residents of African, Caribbean or Pacific countries. 50% of finalists will be women founders or co-founders of startups. USAID accepts applications for the Accelerating Women Entrepreneurs prize. The prize provides acceleration services including investment readiness consulting, investor matchmaking support, and business analysis to women entrepreneurs. Projects may be focussing on various thematic areas around the main topic agriculture, including aquaculture/livestock, pest management, irrigation and water, and postharvest among others. Eligibility extends to women-owned or operated commercial enterprises in sub-Saharan Africa that provide services and projects to smallholder farmers. Applications must be submitted by 25 April 2018. BASF seeks applications for its 2018 Newtrition® Asia Research grant program that aims to fund academics in the Asia-Pacific region to study nutritional topics that will advance research relevant to diet and health for consumers. Projects must have a significant scientific value, addressing existing health issues of populations in the Asia Pacific region in the areas of human nutrition and food science. JIRCAS provides fellowships to researchers in developing countries to collaborate with Japanese counterparts for research in agriculture, forestry, and fisheries. “Tsukuba” fellowships are carried out at the JIRCAS headquarters in Japan. “Project Site” fellowships are at research institutes in the developing countries where JIRCAS collaborative research projects are being implemented. Sida funds short-term training in selected development topics for participants from developing countries. The East Africa regional program includes a course in healthy livestock and safe food for applicants from Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda. Invited to participate are governmental departments and agencies, including universities, research institutes and laboratories, cooperatives and other interest groups as well as non-governmental organizations engaged in the sectors of animal health, food safety and antimicrobial resistance. DAAD offers scholarships for PhD and Master studies. The scholarships are intended for graduate and postgraduate students from South East Asia who want to pursue Master’s or PhD courses in sustainable agricultural and rural development in their home country (In-Country scholarships) or in another South East Asia country (In-Region scholarships). DAAD In-Country/In-Region scholarship holders are also encouraged to apply for a research grant in Germany for 2 up to 6 months. The scholarship covers tuition; study and research allowance; food, lodging and incidental expenses; travel; and insurance. Female applicants are especially encouraged to participate. As part of the Pan African Soil Challenge, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) in Ethiopia offers a journalistic scholarship within the project “A bridge to Africa”. The aim of the project is to support Africa to implement methods to make food production sustainable and secure. Selected candidates from Africa will meet Geo-scientists from Forschungszentrum Jülich in Accra, to get in contact with the latest methods of modern geoscientific research – modeling and simulation with supercomputers. African journalist (print, TV, radio or Social Media, for instance Blogs) who is devoted to the possibilities of modern science to tackle great societal challenges are invited to apply. The Intra-Africa Academic Mobility Scheme provides funding to support training of graduate students in African universities. The current scheme provides fellowships (PhDs and MSc) as well as short term mobility for students and staff in Agroforestry, Ecology, Biodiversity, Agro-Ecology and Food Systems; and Natural Resource Management; among others. The scholarships are open to candidates from Senegal, Uganda, Benin, Malawi, Mozambique, Congo, Tunisia, Mali, Madagascar, Lesotho and Sudan. The Innovation Grant Facility (IGF) provides funding to agro-based small & medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in seven Pacific Island States; Fiji, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga and Vanuatu. Projects should focus on “Leveraging the Development of Local Food Crops and Fisheries Value Chains for Improved Nutrition and Sustainable Food Systems in the Pacific Islands” and be executed by SMEs that aim to grow their business and contribute, directly or indirectly, to the sustainable development of the agriculture and fishery sectors.
