As part of the Pan African Soil Challenge, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) in Ethiopia offers a journalistic scholarship within the project “A bridge to Africa”. The aim of the project is to support Africa to implement methods to make food production sustainable and secure. Selected candidates from Africa will meet Geo-scientists from Forschungszentrum Jülich in Accra, to get in contact with the latest methods of modern geoscientific research – modeling and simulation with supercomputers. African journalist (print, TV, radio or Social Media, for instance Blogs) who is devoted to the possibilities of modern science to tackle great societal challenges are invited to apply. The Innovation Grant Facility (IGF) provides funding to agro-based small & medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in seven Pacific Island States; Fiji, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga and Vanuatu. Projects should focus on “Leveraging the Development of Local Food Crops and Fisheries Value Chains for Improved Nutrition and Sustainable Food Systems in the Pacific Islands” and be executed by SMEs that aim to grow their business and contribute, directly or indirectly, to the sustainable development of the agriculture and fishery sectors. The African Union Commission calls for research proposals that contribute to the sustainable development of African countries and the fight against poverty under Phase II of the African Union Research Grants programme. The call supports research on: Food, Nutrition Security and Sustainable Agriculture. Selected research projects receive between US$ 500 thousand and US$ 1 million. Eligibility extends to legal entities such as organizations, research institutions, universities, and government ministries from African Union Member States or EU Member States. The EU, through its Intra-Africa Academic Mobility Scheme, provides funding to support training of graduate students at African universities. A total of 24 Masters and 12 Doctorates will be trained in the thematic areas of Plant breeding, Biotechnology, Seed science, Agronomy, and Pesticides and plant protection. The scholarship includes a subsistence allowance of €900 per month for PhD candidates and €600 for MSc candidates. Women and candidates with disabilities are particularly encouraged to apply. The Food and Nutrition Technical Unit (UTSAN) calls for projects that aim to improve the food and nutritional security of rural households in Honduras. Proposed projects must focus on training/capacity building of Indigenous and local leaders in SAN and resilience in the Dry Corridor of West Honduras. Grants requested under this call must be between €400 and €500 thousand for projects of up to 20 months. The Barilla Center for Food and Nutrition sponsors BCFN YES! (Young Earth Solutions) as an international competition for young researchers on the theme of sustainable food systems. The program offers one-year research grants up to €20 thousand to PhD and postdoc researchers worldwide from any background and nationality. The maximum age is 35. Subject areas include climate change, resilient agriculture, sustainable water management, ecosystem services, food policy, and many others. The competition encourages the participation of teams from different disciplines and countries who wish to combine their expertise in innovative approaches. In partnership with the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), icipe announces research scholarships in the African Regional Postgraduate Programme in Insect Sciences (ARPPIS). The program supports three-year doctoral research studies to prepare young researchers in Sub-Saharan Africa for internationally competitive research careers in insect and related sciences. Qualified female candidates, candidates from less privileged regions or groups, and candidates with disabilities are especially encouraged to apply. Qualified nationals of French- and Portuguese-speaking countries in Africa are also especially encouraged to apply. The Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture (RUFORUM) announces PhD scholarships available through the German Academic Exchange Services (DAAD) for doctoral studies at three universities in Eastern and Central Africa. They are the Nelson Mandela African Institution of Sciences and Technology (Tanzania); Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (Kenya); and Makerere University (Uganda). The Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture (RUFORUM) is partnering with the MasterCard Foundation to implement the programme “Transforming African Agricultural Universities to meaningfully contribute to Africa’s growth and development”. For the academic year 2018, 45 Bachelor and 15 Master scholarships are available of which 70% will be for Kenya and Uganda nationals. The aim is to transform African agricultural universities and their graduates to better respond to developmental challenges through enhanced application of science, technology, business and innovation for rural agricultural transformation.
