The EC calls for proposals to identify an institution that will manage a fund to integrate smallholder farmers and pastoralists within their value chains by blending grants and commercial loans to promote agribusiness in Kenya.  Eligibility for funding extends to NGOs, public sector operators, local authorities, and international (inter-governmental) organisations based in the EU and ACP countries (including Kenya).  Reference EuropeAid/154913/DD/ACT/KE.  The deadline for concept notes is 05 September 2017.  Link

The UK’s ESRC is partnering with other UK research councils and the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) to launch a a new UK-Colombia programme in sustainable tropical agriculture. The focus is on pulses and tropical forages.  Proposals for the pump-priming phase of this call will be developed at a scoping workshop to be held at CIAT headquarters in Cali, Colombia (October-November 2017). Participation in the workshop is mandatory for leading an application. The deadline for expressions of interest to participate in the workshop is 06 September 2017. Link

The Geodata for Agriculture and Water (G4AW) Facility uses satellite-based information, agricultural inputs, advice, and/or financial services to aid food producers to sustain and increase their production and livelihoods. G4AW focuses on achieving more efficient use of agricultural water, particularly in irrigated areas and water basins. The G4AW partner countries are Angola, Bangladesh, Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cambodia, Colombia, Ethiopia, Ghana, Indonesia, Kenya, Laos, Malawi, Mali, Mozambique, Myanmar, Niger, Rwanda, Senegal, South Africa, South Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, Vietnam, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. The program invites applications from partnerships of Dutch organizations working with organizations in the G4AW countries, both private and public. Grants will range from €500 thousand to €3 million for projects up to three years. Each partnership must contribute to project costs. The deadline for applications is 14 September 2017. Link

The EC invites proposals to strengthen Gambia’s smallholder agriculture as a strategy for poverty reduction.  Grants will be made in three lots (focus areas):  agro-ecology and ecological restoration; market access and value chains in agriculture; and access to quality food.   Eligibility for funding extends to nonprofit organizations in the EU and The Gambia. USAID/Kenya announces a 5-year program of US$60 million to strengthen production and marketing systems for dairy and crop production in Kenya. The program will involve multiple regions of the country; multiple intervention strategies; and multiple partners. Eligibility to apply is unrestricted. Funding Opportunity RFA-615-17-000006. USAID in Kenya will make multiple grants (“leader plus associates”) under the Feed the Future program to assist the Kenyan livestock sector, focusing on projects in the northern counties. Project activities should aim for improvements in livestock and related market systems; expanded and diversified market-oriented livelihood opportunities; improved governance and management of range lands and water; drought cycle management; and multiple other objectives during projects of five years. Orskov makes grants to support student projects in agriculture and sustainable land use in developing countries. Preference will be given to training that emphasizes animal, plant, and soil interactions. Projects should have the potential to alleviate poverty and to provide sustainable environmental benefits, including adaptation/mitigation to the impacts of climate change. Applications are invited from individuals in lower-income and lower middle-income countries. The program includes student grants up to £2,500 to support studies at a university or similar organization other than the university/college in which the applicant is registered. The application period is 01 October through 31 December of each year. Link

The UK’s BBSRC is collaborating with partner organizations in China, the Philippines, and Thailand on research of microbiological diseases in swine and poultry. Proposals should have a UK Principal Investigator, in addition to a Principal Investigator from one or more of the partner countries. BBSRC offers up to £6 million for this research, and partner organizations in China, the Philippines, and Thailand will provide matched funding. Each country provides eligibility rules for applicants. The deadline for letters of intent is 22 June 2017. Link

UK organisations can apply to work with Chinese partners on innovative agricultural solutions in China. Subject areas are precision agriculture; improved efficiency of sustainable agriculture; and processing of agricultural products. Eligible projects need to include one UK business and one UK higher education institute or research council institute eligible for BBSRC funding. Project partners in China need to include one Chinese business and one academic institution. Project costs can be £1 million to £2 million, with grant size not exceeding £1 million in the UK.
