The UNESCO Regional Bureau for Science and Culture in Europe launches a call for applications for UNESCO-designated sites in Europe and North America. The Youth Innovation Challenge (YIC) invites applicants from 15 to 30 years of age to propose innovative solutions to protect marine resources and support people of all ages to be engaged stewards for marine conservation. Global Environmental Education Partnership seeks solutions that are innovative, feasible, and informed by research. Three solutions will be awarded a US$1000 prize. The U.S. Department of State seeks to strengthen the capacity of wildlife institutions and actors in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. The call seeks to enhance law enforcement and justice sector efforts to counter wildlife trafficking, ultimately helping to disrupt wildlife trafficking operations, and removing opportunities for criminal organizations to profit from illicit proceeds derived from the wildlife trade. Funding ranges from US$150 thousand to US$3 million. Eligibility for this award is restricted to US-based and foreign non-profit organizations and educational institutions. The Darwin Initiative contributes knowledge that links biodiversity conservation and poverty reduction in low and middle-income countries. Darwin Plus Fellowships aim to build capacity within the UK Overseas Territories through training opportunities. There are two different budget templates for projects requesting over and under £100 thousand. The Project Leader can be based in any country. However, all Darwin Plus projects are expected to seek in-territory partners. Projects led by in-territory partners/organizations are encouraged. The challenge seeks creative ideas, projects, and business solutions to the problems that matter to local communities and welcomes ideas from anywhere in the world. Participants compete for awards of up to US$10 thousand to deliver activities that improve lives, help communities, and protect the planet. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) invites governments to submit applications to a special program on waste management in developing countries. The program may provide financial support of up to US$275 thousand (in certain circumstances up to US$500 thousand) to strengthen the capacities of national institutions and help the government develop and monitor the implementation of national policies, strategies, programs, and legislation. The Yale Environment 360 Film Contest accepts entries of environmental films from around the world. Submissions should focus on an environmental issue and be a maximum of 20 minutes in length. The MIDORI Prize is a biennial international prize to honor individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity at global, regional, or local levels. The EDGE of Existence Program provides fellowships for two-year projects in research and conservation of EDGE (Evolutionarily Distinct and Globally Endangered) mammals, amphibians, corals, and birds. The program is open to early-career conservation biologists who are nationals or residents of the country in which the EDGE species occur. The focus in 2024 is EDGE species in Asia and the Pacific. EDGE Fellows receive a grant of up to £10 thousand; an opportunity to attend two regional training courses and to undertake online modules in relevant topics; and one-to-one support from a scientific advisor. The Pulitzer Center accepts applications for the Ocean Reporting Network (ORN). The network will establish a collaborative ecosystem of journalists around the world to uncover the harmful and illegal practices of the fishing and extractive industries, and systemic threats to marine biodiversity and coastal communities. The Pulitzer Center will cover a reporter’s salary and provide additional support for the media outlet that employs the journalist.
