The National Geographic Society funds individuals working on projects in science, conservation, storytelling, education, and technology that align with one or more of their focus areas: Ocean, Land, Wildlife, Human History & Culture, Human Ingenuity. Level I grants receive funding up to US$20 thousand and offer unique opportunities for training, networking, coaching, and mentorship from fellow National Geographic experts. Level II grants are up to US$100 thousand. Currently, National Geographic Society seeks innovative photography, short film, writing, data visualization and other storytelling proposals to help water users understand the issues around global water sustainability. The Joan Cogswell Donner Field School Scholarship provides up to US$2 thousand towards field school tuition for students to support training in fieldwork related to human origins research. Applications for this scholarship have to be submitted by the field school director, not the scholarship recipient. Recipients must be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program in a country where there are limited resources for academic development. The scholarship is awarded year-round. The Earth Journalism Network (EJN) invites journalists from Nairobi, Kenya to join a media workshop on air pollution (February 2024). The two-day workshop will strengthen the knowledge and skills of local journalists to report on air pollution in Nairobi. Applications are open to Kenyan journalists based in Nairobi County from print, online, radio and television media outlets. Meals and local travel allowance will be provided. The Wildlife Acoustics Scientific Product Grant Program offers US$4 thousand of product-in-kind grants to biologists, researchers, conservationists, and students who work for charitable, educational, and other tax-exempt organizations. Restore4Life provides scientific and technical support for the implementation of wetland restoration solutions in Europe. Each associated region can apply for up to €100 thousand in project support. The U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) invites submission of interdisciplinary proposals addressing grand challenges in biodiversity science within the context of unprecedented environmental change, including climate change. The program supports a comprehensive and integrative approach to understanding planetary biodiversity from a functional perspective. Research supported by this program will improve modeling and forecasting of the consequences of functional change in biodiversity. The program supports both US-only collaborative proposals and proposals with international partnerships with National Science Foundations in China, Brazil, and South Africa. Proposals may be submitted by non-profit organizations and institutions of higher education. The total anticipated funding amount is up to US$17 million. The Western Indian Ocean Marine Science Association (WIOMSA) launches a regional call for proposals to support demonstrative field actions aimed at fostering the restoration, the management and the sustainable use of marine and coastal ecosystems. The project must have a minimal duration of 12 months. Grants range from €50 thousand to €150 thousand. Applicants must be based in Comoros, Madagascar, Mauritius, or Seychelles. The Eastern Bird Banding Association (EBBA) seeks applicants for grants to be used toward research using banding techniques and/or bird banding data. One or more grants totaling up to US$5 thousand will be awarded. Priority is for research on species that spend at least part of their life cycle in any U.S. state or Canadian province, included in EBBA territory. Projects that are planned for other portions of the USA, Canada, or the Western Hemisphere may also be considered.
