The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s aim is to conserve, protect and enhance fish, wildlife and plants and their habitats for the continuing benefit of the American people. For that reason, the USFWS “Wildlife Without Borders” seeks proposals to reduce threats to key wildlife populations in Central Africa from wildlife trafficking, unsustainable resource use, and human-wildlife conflicts. Grants under this call will range from US$30 thousand to US$2 million. Grants are to organizations, institutions of higher education, governments and individuals. The USAID/Eastern and Southern Caribbean Local Capacity for Local Solutions (LCLS) project focuses on building the capacity of NGOs in the Eastern and Southern Caribbean region. USAID will award Comprehensive Capacity Grants of US$25 thousand to non-profit organizations with projects in different sectors, one of which is the environment. Eligibility extends to local NGOs from Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana,  St. Lucia, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname, and Trinidad and Tobago. The British Council supports research workshops under the programs Researcher Links and the Newton Fund to assist early-career researchers to interact and explore research collaborations. The British Council invites early-career researchers from the UK and São Paulo (Brazil) to apply to attend the workshop “Environment and Development: Shared 21st Century Sustainability Challenges” (July 2019). The Earth Journalism Network (EJN) offers grants to support stories focused on monitoring and investigating the illegal wildlife trade in Europe. Typical grant sizes for this project are in the range of US$4 thousand to US$6 thousand (in special cases up to US$10 thousand). Investigative journalists with prior experience covering wildlife crime are invited to apply. Journalists interested in applying for funding have to contact EJN via email. The Ecology Department at the Biology Center of the Czech Academy of Science and the Zoology Department of the University of South Bohemia invite PhD applicants to join a project exploring plant-herbivore interactions in the lowland rainforest in Papua New Guinea. The selected candidate will live in Czech Republic, conduct field work in New Guinea, and carry out the chemistry analysis with collaborators in Germany, Finland and the US.  Applicants from any nationality are eligible. The U.S. Department of State seeks applications for the programme ‘Combat Wildlife Trafficking in Brazil’. Programs need to build Brazil’s capacity to deter, detect, investigate, prosecute, and adjudicate wildlife poaching and trafficking cases. Eligibility extends to US or overseas non-governmental organizations (NGOs). Grants range from between US$300 thousand to US$750 thousand. The application deadline is 29 March 2019. Details

In partnership with the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), icipe announces research scholarships in the African Regional Postgraduate Programme in Insect Sciences (ARPPIS). The programme supports three-year doctoral research studies to prepare young researchers in Sub-Saharan Africa for internationally competitive research careers in insect and related sciences. Qualified female candidates, candidates from less privileged regions or groups, and candidates with disabilities are especially encouraged to apply. Qualified nationals of French- and Portuguese-speaking countries in Africa are also especially encouraged to apply. The European Commission seeks proposals to achieve sustainable and integrated management of protected areas, riparian territories and corridors of the complex formed by PoNaSi (Burkina Faso), Comoé (Côte d’Ivoire) and Mole (Ghana). The overall goal is to promote endogenous, sustainable and inclusive economic development that responds to the challenges of climate change. The UNCCD presents the “Land for Life” Award for inspiring efforts in land conservation and management. Eligibility is open to individuals and institutions worldwide that are making a significant and innovative contribution to reduce the impacts of land degradation and desertification. In particular, the focus is on helping communities at risk or forced to abandon their homes due to insecurity deriving from environmental degradation. Award winners will receive a support package from the UNCCD Secretariat to include networking with interested organizations; assistance to promote the winning initiatives nationally and internationally; and opportunities to showcase them at national and international events.
