The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) launches the Climate Innovation Fund to award innovative ideas that will help improve the conservation and sustainable use of natural resources in Ethiopia. Projects should increase the sustainable use of natural resources, create job opportunities through the use of biodiversity, and help restore degraded landscapes. GIZ will contribute up to €50 thousand worth of investments. GIZ invites start-ups and small businesses in the sectors of technology (app developers), food production, cosmetics, pharmaceutical and timber to apply. The U.S. Department of State announces a funding opportunity for “Accelerating Clean Energy Transitions Technology Needs Assessment” under the Clean Technology and Trade Partnership Initiative. The purpose of this project is to accelerate affordable clean energy transitions in select developing and emerging countries in support of national decarbonization needs in these critical markets. A total of US$684 thousand of funding will be made available under this call. EmPower Her seeks to close the financing gap for early-stage clean energy projects in least developed markets by supporting women-led organizations or organizations whose main focus is women’s empowerment. Private sector developers, NGOs, universities and research centers from least developed countries are eligible to apply. The United States African Development Foundation (USADF) and All On invite proposals for the Off-Grid Energy Challenge from Nigerian off-grid energy companies. Selected enterprises will receive funding in the form of convertible debt and grant capital in the amount of max. US$100 thousand. The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) and the Elsevier Foundation invite applications for project grants for Gender Equity and Climate Action. Grants are awarded to teams of 2-5 women for action-based projects which, although scientific in nature, will take them outside the lab to promote practical and tangible change under the umbrella of the “climate action” SDG in their local context. The project grant is designed to be flexible, with a total value of up to US$25 thousand. The Earth Journalism Network (EJN) offers reporting grants to journalists in Kenya to support the production of in-depth stories on the impacts of climate change. EJN welcomes story ideas that focus on the short- and long-term consequences of environmental destruction and other drivers of climate change. The Networks expects to award up to 10 grants with an average budget of US$800 each. Journalists from Kenya working in any medium (online, print, television, radio) and other expert media practitioners with professional reporting experience are welcome to apply. SouthSouthNorth (SSN) supports national and regional responses to climate change through policy and knowledge interventions, partnerships and deep collaboration. The Voices for Just Climate Action (VCA) program supports communications and capacity development projects in Kenya to ensure that underrepresented groups become advocates of innovative and inclusive climate solutions. The Alliance seeks to partner with Kenyan organizations specializing in climate change-related research and advocacy for local CSOs, focusing on women, youth, urban poor, rural communities, and marginalized groups. The Thomson Reuters Foundation invites applications for a webinar series on the media’s role in a sustainable recovery in Asia and the Pacific. The goal is to help journalists strengthen their climate coverage. Webinar participants will hear from leading experts on the media’s role in helping to avert a climate catastrophe and will learn how to inform news consumers – especially young people – who turn information into action. The U.S. Embassy announces assistance for community projects in Somalia. Priority areas include one on mitigating the effects of climate change. Projects should focus on educating the public about the effects of climate change and raise awareness about efforts to mitigate its impact. The average contribution is US$25 thousand per project.
