The Global Makers Challenge invites innovative start-ups, entrepreneurs and businesses to submit solutions to solve real-world problems. The current Sustainable Energy challenge seeks manufacturing methods and products that allow increased access to low carbon energy for people living in rural and isolated communities. Applications are invited from innovators around the world without any geographical limitations. The winner receives prizes, including cash and mentorship. Shortlisted companies will be invited to a pitch live session in UAE (May 2019), finalist will be invited to the Global Manufacturing and Industrialisation Summit (July 2019) in Russia. The European Commission seeks project proposals (two-stage call) to ensure the integrity of all ecosystems and the protection of biodiversity in the context of combatting climate change. Actions should investigate how ecological processes, biodiversity (including terrestrial and/or marine ecosystems) and ecosystem services are impacted by climate change. The Commission will consider proposals in the range of €5 million to €7 million. International cooperations and legal entities established in EU Member States, Overseas Countries and Territories and Horizon 2020 associated countries (as detailed in the call) are eligible to apply under this call. The European Commission seeks project proposals (two-stage call) to understand the role of climate change in shaping population migration patterns around the world (e.g. Africa to Europe) and ensure the adaptation of less developed countries, particularly in Africa. Actions should address only one of the following sub-topics: (A) Climate services for Africa; and (B) climate change and its effects on human migration. The Commission will consider proposals in the range of €5 million to €7 million. The International Council for Science, in collaboration with several partner organizations, invites applications for the IRDR (Integrated Research on Disaster Risk) Young Scientists Program. The program offers young scientists (under age 40) of any nationality the opportunity to engage with a global network of professionals and practitioners. Benefits include international linkages and the possibility to be invited for additional training. Applicants need to be affiliated with an academic program (either master or doctorate), either as a student or as a young faculty. The closing date for applications is 31 December 2018. The IDRC seeks local, independent research organizations, or think tanks, that undertake cross-cutting research or actions on climate mitigation and climate adaptation solutions to tackle climate change challenges in Indonesia. Selected organizations will receive a grant of up to CA$300 thousand each over a period of 30 months. Interested organizations should submit an expression of interest by 03 January 2019. The European Commission aims to increase capacity and establish an enabling environment for Chinese CSOs to address issues of poverty and inequality. One of the priorities under this call is to increase participation in climate change decisions and mitigating its adverse effects. Eligible actions include mainly capacity building, networking, advocacy and research activities. Grants requested under this call for proposals must fall between €750 thousand and €1.25 million. The European Commission supports local civil society organisations in Malawi tackling climate change and mitigating its adverse effects. Focus areas of this call are (Lot 1) poverty alleviation through mitigating the impacts of climate change on the lives of community members, and (Lot 2) sustainable management of waste to enable the transition to a climate-resilient, low emissions economy. The Africa Energy Indaba Exhibition (Johannesburg, February 2019) focuses on energy projects on the continent, rural energy solutions, urbanization and energy needs and the renewable & sustainable energy industry. Africa Energy Indaba seeks solutions to energy problems in Africa and invites projects in the areas of energy security, environmental sustainability, and affordable energy to apply for the African Youth Energy Innovator Showcase 2019. The contest is open to 18 to 35 year old individuals from across Africa. The Top-5 finalists will each receive an opportunity to showcase their Innovation in a 2-day Exhibition during the Africa Energy Indaba (all expenses paid). The Japan Africa Scholarship (JADS) Program, funded by the Government of Japan, provides a two-year scholarship to African students for post-graduate studies in the area of sustainable energy in Japan. The scholarship program provides tuition, a monthly living stipend, round-trip airfare, health insurance, and travel allowance. The program is open to students who have gained admission to an approved Masters degree course at a Japanese partner university. Candidates should be 35 years old or younger. Germany has provided government funding of approx. €2.7 billion for bilateral development projects in Bangladesh. Focus areas under this call are Renewable Energy, Climate Change, and Human Rights.
