The Bioresources Innovations Network for Eastern Africa Development (BioInnovate Africa) strives to improve long-term food security, agriculture, and livelihoods in East Africa. The Programme is a regional initiative supported by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida).
BioInnovate Africa assists countries in eastern Africa to benefit from the revolutionary advances in biosciences, by converting such technologies into innovations for inclusive growth and sustainable development.
Grant Programs for Agriculture, Energy, Environment, Natural Resources
Grants for scientists, researchers, innovators or entrepreneurs in East Africa. Grants by BioInnovate aim to strengthen small-holder agriculture in East Africa through the following actions:
- Developing and piloting economically viable and innovative biobased technologies and products;
- Incubating biobased technology businesses;
- Developing an innovation-driven bioeconomy strategy;
- Improving crop productivity and resilience to climate change in small-scale farming systems;
- Improving the efficiency of the agro-processing industry to add value to local bio-resources in a sustainable manner.

Grants range from €250 thousand to €750 thousand for projects of at least three years.
Each call includes eligibility criteria; a list of countries eligible for grant activities; thematic focus areas; an application form; and details regarding the selection process.
The selection of grant recipients is made in two stages. Applicants submit concept notes. An independent panel of experts will create a shortlist and BioInnovate Africa invites full proposals from the shortlisted teams.
