Grants for community-based development and conservation in the Pacific Islands

The Pacific Development and Conservation Trust is managed by New Zealand’s Department of Internal Affairs. Every year the Trust makes grants to groups and individuals in the South Pacific for projects in development and conservation.
Grant Programs for Agriculture, Energy, Environment, Natural Resources
Projects for conservation and development. The Trust funds projects in conservation, cultural heritage, development, and goodwill in the Pacific. Thematic areas include:
- Conservation projects that involve representative, endangered, threatened, or unique habitats and species;
- Sustainable projects associated with conservation and the environment at a national and/or local level; and
- Cultural and social projects that promote healthy livelihoods, self-sufficiency, and sustainability.
Grants are awarded to civil society organizations in New Zealand and eligible Pacific Island countries and territories. There is no minimum or maximum grant size. Most grants range from NZ$2 thousand to NZ$50 thousand.
APPLICATION: The Trust has two funding rounds per year and posts details about the application process, together with application forms.
Applications are presented in two stages. The Trust invites expressions of interest (EOI) before an annual calendar deadline. Successful applicants in this first stage are invited to submit full proposals.

Southeast Asia and Pacific Islands: Fiji, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Nauru, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, Vanuatu
Note: Additionally, the Trust funds projects in the following Pacific Islands not defined as countries in the Terra Viva Grants Directory: American Samoa, Cook Islands, French Polynesia, Guam, New Caledonia, Niue, Northern Mariana Islands, Pitcairn, Tokelau, and Wallis and Fortuna. Projects can also be for the benefit of New Zealand and Australia.
The Trust was established with funding from France in recognition of the events surrounding the destruction of the Greenpeace “Rainbow Warrior” in Auckland Harbor in 1985.
