Nature conservation in the developing world. Rufford’s grants are to individuals and small groups for field projects that have clear conservation objectives in developing countries. The Foundation focuses on early-career conservationists, and a majority of its funding goes to MSc and PhD students.
The grants are intended to support small-scale or pilot projects, rather than providing a small amount of funding for a large project. The Foundation prefers projects that are pragmatic; that will make a substantial and long-lasting impact; and that have a significant human element. In general, the Foundation prefers to support projects at the ecosystem level rather than species work.
Eligibility for funding extends to individuals and small groups located in the developing countries. The Foundation will not consider applications from first-world countries unless the project is in a developing country; has a very high capacity-building component; and addresses a high conservation priority.
Projects which offer opportunities to train local team members in project management, and those with an educational element for local communities, are strongly preferred.
If the work is part of a post-graduate study, there needs to be a strong emphasis on fieldwork that has clear conservation benefits. If a grant is awarded, it is for the field-based element.
APPLICATION: Applicants establish a user account and submit applications online.
Grant applications are made in sequential stages: first grant, second grant, booster grant, second booster grant, and completion grant:
- First and second small grants are up to £6 thousand each.
- Booster and second booster grants are up to £10 thousand.
- Completion Grants are up to £15 thousand.
An application requires a project description, proposed budget, and three references. The Foundation will not process applications that do not include the supporting references.
Applications can be submitted at any time; there is no calendar deadline.
