The Tyler Prize for Environmental Achievement is awarded for exceptional accomplishments in environmental science, energy, and medicine. The Prize is administered by the University of Southern California.
The Prize recognizes and honors individuals who focus worldwide attention on environmental problems by their discoveries, and the solutions that have resulted.
Grant Programs for Agriculture, Energy, Environment, Natural Resources
Tyler Prize. The Prize is awarded for achievements in any of the following thematic areas:
- Protection, maintenance, improvement, or understanding of an ecological or an environmental condition anywhere in the world;
- Discovery, further development, improvement, or understanding of known or new sources of energy; and
- Medical discoveries or achievements with such worldwide implications that they significantly benefit environmental aspects of human health.
Past prize winners have been distinguished in scientific and technical areas such as the following examples (not inclusive):
- The global nitrogen cycle;
- Global biodiversity assessments;
- Wastewater treatment in developing countries;
- Status and condition of freshwater ecosystems;
- Analysis and forecasting of the global water budget;
- Measurements of atmospheric carbon dioxide;
- Climate implications of tropical glaciers;
- Eco-friendly technologies to supply water and energy in South Asia;
- Advancement of botanical sciences in Latin America;
- Biological control of insect pests;
- New approaches in conservation biology.
The Tyler Prize can be awarded to living individuals or public or private institutions anywhere in the world. The amount of the Prize is US$200 thousand cash and a gold medal (joint winners share the cash prize).
About the Tyler Prize
APPLICATION: The Tyler Prize is awarded annually through competitive nominations.
Nominations include the nominee’s CV or resume; a brief statement of the individual’s accomplishments; three or more letters of reference; and names and addresses of additional references. All materials must be submitted in English. Self-nominations are not accepted.
The website posts the annual calendar deadline by which nominations and supporting materials must be received.
