Newton Fund

Partnerships in science and innovation in support of the UK’s development assistance

The UK’s Newton Fund supports collaborative projects and capacity building in science and technology in order to reduce poverty and contribute to sustainable development in partner countries.

The Fund is a collaborative partnership of several UK academies, research councils, and other UK organizations focusing on science and technology. Each of these delivery partners manages its own calls for proposals.

Grant Programs for Agriculture, Energy, Environment, Natural Resources

Science and innovation for development. The Newton Fund supports research projects, training opportunities, scoping workshops and travel grants to promote UK science collaboration with partners in the eligible countries. The participating UK institutions include (among others):

  • British Council
  • Economic and Social Research Council
  • Met Office
  • Biotechnology and Biosciences Research Council
  • Natural Environment Research Council
  • Royal Society

Depending on the programs of each participating UK partner, thematic areas range across sustainable agriculture; climate change and disaster prevention; biodiversity conservation; and others.

The Fund offers guidelines about how the program works, and how applicants in the eligible countries can search for UK partners.

The Newton Fund operates in the following developing and emerging countries, applying the geographical framework of the Terra Viva Grants Directory.

Southeast Asia and Pacific Islands: Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam

East Asia: China

South Asia: India

Eurasia and Central Asia: Kazakhstan, Turkey

Middle East and North Africa: Egypt, Jordan

Sub-Saharan Africa: Kenya, South Africa

Latin America and Caribbean: Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Peru

The Newton Prize recognizes excellent research and innovation in support of economic development and social welfare. At least five Newton projects, fellowships, or other awards will be funded each year from 2017 until 2021. Each prize is up to £200 thousand.

As another component in the UK’s international assistance for capacity building, the Chevening Scholarship Programme offers funding at UK institutions of higher education for post-graduate students worldwide (excluding the EU and USA). Eligible subject areas often include one or more of agriculture, energy, climate change, environment, and sustainable development.
