The European Commission calls for concept notes outlining projects that improve the climate resilience of agrosystems through concrete actions that mitigate the effects of climate change. Grants range from €500 thousand to €2 million. Eligibility extends to non-profit organisations established in a Member State of the European Union or in Mauritania. European Commission — Improving Water Supply and Sanitation

The European Commission calls for concept notes from non-profit organizations that implement projects to improve access to safe water, adequate sanitation and hygiene practices in urban and small towns in Nigeria. Grants are up to €330 thousand for 2 years. Eligibility extends to non-profit organisations established in a Member State of the European Union or African, Caribbean and Pacific country. SEED — SAG-Seed Replicator Workshops for Eco-Enterprises in Ghana

SEED is a global partnership founded by UNEP, UNDP, and IUCN to promote eco-enterprises. The program announces its next replicator workshop in Ghana. The replicator workshop of one day introduce motivated individuals to proven business models from various countries. Participants will learn how to adapt them to your individual local context to solve environmental, social and economic challenges. Focus areas are waste management and sustainable tourism. Future entrepreneurs, business owners and NGOs are welcome to apply. The participation in the workshop is free of charge, participants must cover their own transport costs however. UK Department for International Development — Research on Economic Growth in Developing Countries (Phase 3)

The IGC invites proposals with focus on delivering research and policy products to developing countries with the aim of creating jobs and reduce poverty. The topics include improving access to and quality of energy services for households and firms; rural electrification; energy efficiency; and the effects of energy consumption on health and the environment. Applications are open worldwide, although IGC’s particular countries of interest are Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Ghana, India, Liberia, Mozambique, Myanmar, Pakistan, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, South Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia. BMCE Bank of Africa — African Entrepreneurship Award 2018

The African Entrepreneurship Award is a business competition inviting young African entrepreneurs to submit their entrepreneurial ideas in two categories, one of which is “Innovation” for projects and business ideas that aim to solve pressing issues in Africa. This refers to business proposals that innovate to create jobs and improve lives addressing problems in areas such as food security, water access, sustainable energy, deforestation,and others. Submissions are invited from for-profit businesses managed by Africans who are at least 18 years old. The competition winners will share US$1 million. The closing date is 30 April 2018. International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology — PhD Scholarships 2018

In partnership with the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), icipe announces research scholarships in the African Regional Postgraduate Programme in Insect Sciences (ARPPIS). The program supports three-year doctoral research studies to prepare young researchers in Sub-Saharan Africa for internationally competitive research careers in insect and related sciences. Qualified female candidates, candidates from less privileged regions or groups, and candidates with disabilities are especially encouraged to apply. Qualified nationals of French- and Portuguese-speaking countries in Africa are also especially encouraged to apply. RUFORUM and DAAD — Doctoral Studies in Agriculture and Food Science for Africans

The Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture (RUFORUM) announces PhD scholarships available through the German Academic Exchange Services (DAAD) for doctoral studies at three universities in Eastern and Central Africa. They are the Nelson Mandela African Institution of Sciences and Technology (Tanzania); Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (Kenya); and Makerere University (Uganda). Swedish Agency for Development Cooperation — Demonstration Environment Projects

The Swedish Agency for Development Cooperation (Sida) seeks applications for its Demonstration Grants program. Proposed projects should be international technology and knowledge exchanges involving new and sustainable solutions which positively and measurably impact the environment and poverty reduction. The programme’s focus areas are climate change adaptation/mitigation; ecosystem services; renewable energy; water and sanitation; and urban development. Eligibility extends to companies or organisations based in Kenya, Mozambique, Tanzania, Zambia, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Bolivia, Colombia, Guatemala, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine. Grants range from SEK 500 thousand to SEK 1.8 million. Applications will be reviewed in two steps. In the first step, applicants submit concept notes. In the second step, applicants whose project ideas have been reviewed and accepted in the first step will be invited to submit a full application. Fondation Nature & Decouvertes — Nature Protection in France and Africa 2018

Fondation Nature & Decouvertes supports projects for nature protection, environmental education, and public awareness in France. Additionally, a few grants support projects with similar themes in Francophone Africa. The next application deadline for environmental education projects (funding of €8 thousand to €15 thousand) is 15 February 2018. Applications for small projects (“coup de main”) ranging from €500 to €3000 can be submitted at any time. Link

British Council — International Research Workshops

The British Council supports research workshops under the programs Researcher Links and the Newton Fund to assist early-career researchers from the UK and partner countries to interact and explore research collaborations. Current opportunities that have one or more environmental themes include: (1) Exploring the potential of biological soft matter science in agrifood challenges, UK, Brazil and Uruguay, with application deadline on 19 February 2018; and (2) Research capacity for sustainable ecosystem-based management of estuaries and coasts in the UK and South Africa, with application deadline on 16 March 2018.
