French Institute for Development Research (IRD) — Video Contest on Development Topics 2016

France’s IRD invites short audiovisual presentations related to the topics of its research in the developing countries of the global South. The contest (“Plein Sud sur la Recherche”) is open to persons ages 18-28 as individuals or in groups. The winner will receive €3 thousand and technical and administrative assistance to engage in post-production opportunities. The application deadline is 15 September 2016. Link

Securing Water for Food — SWFF Grants, Round 4

The Securing Water for Food Grand Challenge for Development (SWFF) is a collaborative initiative among the U.S. Agency for International Development, the Swedish International Development Agency, the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Government of South Africa. The current call for proposals focuses on improving water efficiency and reusing agricultural wastewater;  effective water capture and storage systems for extending temporal availability of water supply; and management of salinity in water supplies.  Awardees will receive between US$100 thousand and US$2 million in funding and acceleration support to bring their innovations to scale. UK Natural Environment Research Council — Building Resilience to Environmental Hazards

The NERC in coordination with other UK research councils calls for inter-disciplinary research on resilience to natural and man-made environmental hazards in the developing world. The focus is on how to build resilience in relation to both sudden and slow-onset environmental hazards (e.g., land degradation, deforestation, drought, hurricanes, and climate change). The lead applicant must be a UK research organization eligible for funding through NERC. Co-investigators can be researchers in low and middle-income countries, as well as researchers in international research organizations. Awards are expected not to exceed £200 thousand for projects ranging from 3-9 months, and exceptionally up to 12 months. The deadline for submitting proposals is 06 September 2016. Link

World Bank — Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery, Challenge Fund 2016

The Challenge Fund calls for proposals that bridge the gap between technology and on-the-ground user needs in the field of disaster risk identification. The Fund seeks to support the development of data, products, and approaches to support disaster risk management decision making. The focus areas are identified in the 2016 announcement. The deadline for expressions of interest is 15 September 2016. Link

UK Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council — Crops for Nutrition

The UK’s BBSRC calls for research to deliver the next generation of crops beneficial for human and/or farmed animal health. BBSRC encourages applications on crops relevant for low and middle-income developing countries. It also welcomes applications in collaboration and/or consultation with the food industry. The program is open to UK researchers eligible for funding from the BBSRC. If they are relevant for the research, international partners can be sub-contracted. Grants are up to £2 million for up to five years. The closing date for applications is 21 September 2016. Link

Lloyd’s — Science of Risk Prize 2016

The Science of Risk Prize for 2016 invites research papers in two categories: natural hazards; and systems modelling. Among other types of risks, Lloyd’s is interested in the impact and management of climate change. The competition offers prizes of £5 thousand for the best research paper in each category. Applicants should be working in a university department or government research organization. The closing date for submissions is 25 September 2016. Link

Birdfair/RSPB Research Fund for Endangered Birds — Applications 2016

The British Birdwatching Fair (Birdfair) and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) jointly provide small grants for research on birds listed by IUCN as “endangered,” “critically endangered,” or “data deficient.” Priority is for researchers working in their own countries, particularly in collaboration with BirdLife’s partners. The maximum grant is US$2 thousand, with preference for smaller requests. The closing date for applications is 31 October 2016. Link

World Intellectual Property Organization — Indigenous Fellowship Program 2017-2018

The World Intellectual Property Organization offers the WIPO Indigenous Fellowship to build stronger capacity in the field of indigenous intellectual property law, and to strengthen capacity on intellectual property law and policy for indigenous lawyers and policy advisers. Subject areas include legal measures to protect traditional knowledge; traditional cultural expressions; and genetic resources. Applications are invited from indigenous persons who have the necessary legal qualifications, or equivalent in
practical experience and community work, to work within the WIPO Secretariat beginning in January 2017. The deadline for expressions of interest is 23 September 2016. Link

Santa Clara University — Global Social Benefit Incubator 2017

The GSBI at Santa Clara University (USA) is an annual program to strengthen social enterprises that use science and technology to address problems of people living in poverty. Past participants include many in water supply, energy, agriculture, and environment in developing countries. The GSBI Accelerator assists selected participants with business plans and other capacity building in support of investment. The GSBI Accelerator invites applications from social entrepreneurs around the world. The application deadline is 21 October 2016. Link

Netherlands Organisation for International Cooperation in Higher Education (NUFFIC) — Tailor-Made Training for Organizations

The Netherlands Fellowship Programs (NFP) include Tailor-made Training to build the capacity of an organization’s staff members. The programme is open to organisations in education, research, government, and civil society. Tailor-Made Training accepts proposals of organisations in NFP partner countries submitted jointly with a Dutch training provider. Application forms are available via the Netherlands embassies. Priorities include proposals focusing on Sub-Saharan Africa, and proposals focusing on food security. Funding is up to €75 thousand, with a co-funding requirement of at least 20%.
