MASHAV funds professional courses organized and hosted by Israeli institutions in subject areas that include agriculture, energy, natural resources, health, education, and social development. The remainder of the 2018 calendar in English-language courses includes one on Agricultural Engineering Technologies (October-November 2018), with an application deadline on 05 August 2018; Agroecological Approaches for Sustainable Intensive Agriculture (October-November 2018), with an application deadline on 20 August 2018; Urban Water Technologies and Management (November 2018), with an application deadline on 24 August 2018; Renewable Energy as a Catalyst for Regional Development (November-December 2018), with an application deadline on 31 August 2018; and Intensive Fish Farming (December 2018), with an application deadline on 28 September 2018. MASHOV offers additional courses in Spanish, French, and Russian. Applications are submitted through Israel’s diplomatic missions. Global Partnership for Sustainable Development Data — Data for Development Projects 2018
The GPSDD seeks innovative proposals for data production, dissemination, and use. This year’s call is anchored around two themes: Scaling local data for impact and Fostering synergies between the communities. Smaller amounts of funding (starting at US$25 thousand) are made for riskier, unproven innovations at the pilot stage. Larger amounts of funding (up to US$250 thousand) will be awarded to proposals which have a clear justification. The pilot funding round will close on 15 August 2018. Link
Youth Peace Initiative — Peacebuilders Video Contest
The Youth Peace Initiative (YPI), together with the Carnegie Foundation and the United Network Of Young Peacebuilders, invites young filmmakers between 18 and 29 years to submit videos that highlight best practices and achievements of young grassroots peace activists (Note: This may include environmental peacebuilding). The best videos compete for the Youth Carnegie Peace Prize. The winner will be awarded with the title ‘Youth Ambassador of the Peace Palace’ during the One Young World Summit in The Hague (The Netherlands) in September/October 2018. Princess Sabeeka Bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa — Women’s Empowerment
Princess Sabeeka Bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa (Bahrain) awards the Global Award for Women’s Empowerment. The Princess invites projects that work to advance gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls through sustainable development and education in their communities. The winners of the four award categories will receive US$100 thousand each. Individuals, civil society, public and private institutions are encouraged to apply. UK Research Councils — Global Challenges Research Fund 2018
The Global Challenges Research Fund invites applications to grow research capability in the UK to meet the challenges faced by developing countries. Examples of thematic areas include sustainable agriculture; clean air, water, and sanitation; renewable energy and materials; addressing environmental shocks and long-term environmental changes; and others. Investigators may request up to £3 million over two years. Both UK and international research organisations (Universities, public laboratories, or nonprofit organisations) can be research partners and receive funds. International Development Research Center — Fight against Antimicrobial Resistance in Livestock
The IDRC seeks research proposals that develop innovative veterinary solutions focused on product development to reduce therapeutic and prevent non-therapeutic antimicrobial (AMR) use by farmers in developing countries. Proposals need to demonstrate how the project will involve women in the research team and that they have considered the potential environmental impacts of their activities. Budgets between CAN$ 1-3 million are accepted. To be eligible, at least one of the administering project institutions should be based in a low or middle-income country. UK Natural Environment Research Council — Innovation Projects for Sustainable Development
The UK Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) calls for innovation projects that enable research outputs from Research Council-funded research to be taken further and developed into practical (non-commercial) application. Among others, NERC also welcomes projects that are aimed at improving economic growth and welfare in developing countries. The scheme invites proposals for awards up to a maximum of £155 thousand with a duration of up to 18 months. This call is open to current or past research council grant-holders. Smogathon — Technology to Fight Air Pollution
Smogathon aims to fight air pollution through technology. Start-ups will compete for $15 thousand in cash and a contract to implement their innovation in Krakow, Poland. Smogathon welcomes participation from any group worldwide that works as a registered company, start-up, foundation, or research group with a legal entity. International RiverFoundation — Fellowship for Women in Water Management
The International RiverFoundation invites applications for the Vera Thiess Fellowship for Women. Women from developing countries get the opportunity to gain valuable work experience through the IRF and its partners, with the goal of advancing women’s participation in water and river management. The Foundation offers a 3 to 6 months fellowship consisting of project work, funding for travel and participation in the International Riversymposium (Australia).
