UN-Habitat and its partners are sponsoring a conference in Canada, scheduled for March 2018, on the subject of cities and the science of climate change. The conference will assess the current state of academic and practice-based knowledge about climate change, identifying gaps and sharing best practices. The conference organizers welcome proposals for events and abstracts for oral sessions. The conference has limited funding available to support the travel of selected applicants from developing countries. United Nations Environment Program — Fighting Plastic in the Oceans
UN Environment and Think Beyond Plastic are sponsoring a worldwide innovation challenge for university students to fight the increasing problem of plastic in oceans. The winners in each of four categories of the competition will attend the Sixth International Marine Debris Conference in California (March 2018), and will receive free mentorship to help them develop their ideas. Coady International Institute — Women’s Leadership 2018
The Global Change Leaders Program is a seven-week education program to enable women from developing countries to strengthen their leadership capacities at the Coady Institute, affiliated with St Francis Xavier University in Canada. The program offers successful candidates a full scholarship that includes tuition, travel, accommodations, and meals. Clean Energy Wire — Grants for Energy and Climate Journalism
Clean Energy Wire CLEW is offering grants for collaborative media teams on stories with international significance. Topics that explore the transition to clean energy, climate policy, and the shift to a low-carbon economy will be considered. Grants will be between €4 thousand and €6 thousand. Columbus Zoo and Aquarium — Conservation Grants 2018
The Columbus Zoo makes conservation grants for research, local community involvement, capacity building, environmental education, and behavior change leading to improved conservation of wildlife and habitat. Grant requests may range from US$1 thousand to US$25 thousand, but grants are limited to US$5 thousand for first-time applicants. First-time applicants must submit a pre-proposal. International Coral Reef Initiative & UN Environment — Grants for Management of Coral Reefs 2017
The ICRI and UN Environmental Grants Programme invite concept notes for projects on sustainable management of coral reefs. Grants up to US$60 thousand will be awarded to projects aimed at contributing to the implementation of the ICRI plan of action and at protecting and preserving coral reefs and/or related ecosystems. The particular emphasis is building climate resilience and facilitating coral recovery. Grants are available to governments, NGOs, and community groups for projects implemented in developing countries, least-developed countries, and small-island developing states. Wildlife Photo — Habitats & Landscapes 2017
The wildlife photography contest series for 2017 is now running. Wildlife Photo will award prizes worth US$18 thousand in total (including photography trips and equipment). A selection of winners and highly-commended images will be exhibited on an outdoor screen in New York City. UN-Habitat — Youth Photography Competition on Climate Change
UN-Habitat is inviting young photographers to participate in a photography contest. The participants should represent solutions to climate change in their communities. The winner of this contest will be sponsored to a fully funded trip to COP-23 in Bonn, Germany where their work will be displayed to gain exposure on a global platform. National Geographic Society — Long-Distance Animal Migration
The National Geographic Society requests proposals from around the world to test innovative approaches that will improve the viability of migratory species. Projects may be focused around conservation, education, research, storytelling, or technology. Preference will be given to proposals that include feasible plans to measure baselines or demonstrate change in key indicators. World Meteorological Organization — International Prize for Model Development 2017
The World Climate Research Programme and the Global Climate Observing System invite nominations for the WCRP/WWRP International Prize for Model Development. The prize is awarded annually to an early- to mid-career researcher for outstanding contributions to model development related to weather and climate. Candidates should be within the first ten years of their career, as measured by receipt of a PhD or equivalent highest qualification.
