The Convention on Biological Diversity adopted the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020 as a framework for the biodiversity-related conventions and for the UN system as a whole. The Biodiversity Indicators Partnership (BIP) calls for proposals addressing the Aichi Biodiversity Targets 1, 3, and 15. Rainforest Biodiversity Group — Conservation in the Neotropics 2017
The Rainforest Biodiversity Group invites proposals for projects that contribute to the conservation of biodiversity in the Neotropics. The priority for 2017 is support for the San Juan – La Selva Biological Corridor in Costa Rica. Eligibility for funding extends to graduate students and non-profit organizations. Funding up to US$1,500 may be used for scientific research, environmental education, sustainable economic development, or other conservation activities that demonstrate benefit to the conservation of wildlife or their habitat. French Institute for Development Research — Research on Plant Biodiversity, Call 2
Funded by IRD in collaboration with several other French organizations, the program “Sud Expert Plantes Développement Durable” (SEP2D) aims to reinforce scientific research on plant biodiversity in 22 tropical countries. The eligible countries are distributed across West Africa; Central Africa; Indian Ocean; and Southeast Asia. Research themes in SEP2D are forest biodiversity; mitigation of mining activities; commercial applications of plant biodiversity; and agro-biodiversity. In comparison with the first call for proposals, Call 2 does not require prior co-funding. Additionally, research institutions or operational actors (NGOs, private or public societies, associations and CSOs, etc) are eligible to lead the partnerships. Funding is up to €40 thousand for national projects, and up to €80 thousand for regional and international projects. The application deadline is 01 March 2017. Link

In Call 3, proposals should address at least one and ideally more than one of the three priority research axes: (i) multi-layer knowledge of plant biodiversity and plant ecosystems; (ii) plant resources and their utilization by communities and stakeholder institutions (ecosystem services); and (iii) strategies and operational approaches for the sustainable management of plant resources and the conservation of habitats and ecosystem services. French Institute for Development Research — Support for International Research Teams 2017
The IRD announces funding to support multidisciplinary international teams (laboratoires mixtes internationaux, LMI) to undertake research that corresponds to IRD’s thematic priorities. These priorities include agronomy and biodiversity; bio-invasions and climate change; sustainable urban development; the ocean-climate interface; micro-biomes in agro-ecosystems; management of water resources; coastal and marine management; and others. The Orangutan Foundation offers research grants of up to of £500 to students studying orangutan behaviour and ecology or related rainforest field research in Indonesia. Preference is for research on ecology, animal wildlife density and population, animal wildlife behaviour, water analysis in Sungai Sekonyer River, and under-studied populations. São Paulo Research Foundation — Brazil/USA Research in Biodiversity 2017
The São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP) and the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) invite researchers to submit 5-year projects for scientific cooperation through their programs, BIOTA and Dimensions of Biodiversity. Research projects must integrate the three dimensions of biodiversity: genetic, phylogenetic, and functional. Researchers associated with public or private higher education or research institutions in the State of São Paulo submit their proposals to FAPESP. U.S. researchers submit to NSF. International Association for Plant Taxonomy — Research in Plant Systematics
The IAPT announces the 2017 round of its competitive grants program in plant systematics, with emphasis on funding students and young investigators in developing countries, but open to applicants worldwide. The award should preferably be used for supporting travel to institutions, laboratory investigations, or fieldwork (if this includes interaction with in-country specialists). Fondation Nature & Decouvertes supports projects for nature protection, environmental education, and public awareness in France. Additionally, a few grants support projects with similar themes in Francophone Africa. The next application deadline for environmental education projects (funding of €8 thousand to €25 thousand) is 01 February 2017.
