VLIR-UOS is the secretariat of Flemish universities for development cooperation, with funding by Belgian Development Cooperation. VLIR-UOS announces courses at Belgian Flemish universities and university colleges that are eligible for scholarships in 2022/23. They include 1-year masters’ programs, along with training courses lasting from two weeks to three months. Subject areas include aquaculture, marine science, plant breeding, nematology, water resources, rural development, and others. Eligibility for scholarships extends to applicants from developing countries in Southeast Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa, and Latin America. The scholarship amount varies with a maximum support of €58,320. Candidates apply directly to the Flemish universities that offer the programs, requesting scholarship support. KU Leuven — PhD Scholarships for Students from the Global South
KU Leuven is the largest university in Flanders, Belgium. As one part of its cooperation to advance international development, KU Leuven offers 10 PhD scholarships to candidates from developing countries. The university offers sandwich scholarships, which means that 50% of the research takes place at KU Leuven and 50% at the home institution of the scholar, as well as full-time research at KU Leuven (4 years). The scholarships are offered to proposals that deal with a development-relevant research topic, preferably linked to the Sustainable Development Goals. U.S. Mission Morocco — STEM Youth Engagement
The Public Diplomacy Grants Program aims to promote positive relations between Morocco and the United States and help Moroccan youth (aged 14-25) build and develop skills to improve their potential through innovative science (especially environmental and health awareness), technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM) programs. The U.S. Mission considers proposals for projects ranging from US$5 thousand to US$25 thousand. An organization or individual may submit an application. Accelerate2030 — Entrepreneurship and Sustainable Development
Accelerate2030 supports entrepreneurs from developing and emerging markets to scale their solutions for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Accelerate2030 is a Scale Readiness Program that provides support based on specific needs, such as access to experts, mentors, and partners. While Accelerate2030 supports solutions to any SDGs, the program is particularly looking for solutions related to the Circular Economy, access to Good Health and Wellbeing and Clean Water. Eppley Foundation — Research in Biological and Physical Sciences
The Eppley Foundation for Research funds projects in medicine, life sciences, and the physical sciences. Areas of interest include innovative medical investigations and applications; endangered animals and ecosystems; and climate change. Applicants for grants must be associated with recognized nonprofit educational or research institutions in the US. Grants may be awarded for research internationally when applicants are based in the USA or are associated with U.S. institutions that will administer the grants. Most grants are under US$25 thousand. The Research Partnership Grants support research projects with collaborating institutions in MENA countries. The Leading House MENA accepts grant applications solely from applicants. The Swiss applicant needs to have a proposed or an ongoing research project with an institutional partner in the MENA region. The maximum grant amount per project is CHF15 thousand. Both the applicant and the partner institute abroad are required to make in-kind contributions to the proposed research project. Oceans & Lakes — Scholarships MSc in Marine and Lacustrine Science and Management
Oceans & Lakes is an interuniversity master program that provides students with a strong fundamental and applied knowledge in the scientific research and management of marine and lacustrine systems. Through the Flemish Inter-University Council (VLIR-UOS), scholarships are provided for this 2-year master program in “Master of Science in Marine and Lacustrine Science and Management” (Oceans & Lakes). The Biosciences Fellowship Program provides early to mid-career biological scientists from Jordan, Iraq, Egypt, and Lebanon with the opportunity to spend 6 months working alongside counterpart professionals at foreign universities. Fellowship focus areas include animal, and zoonotic infectious diseases; among others. The Ashoka Fellowship selects social entrepreneurs with high impact and systems change projects in Mexico, Central American and Caribbean countries.
