The “Swiss Programme for Research on Global lssues for Development” (r4d programme) promotes applied, need-based scientific research in developing countries. Projects that analyse, develop and test innovative solutions to sustainable development challenges in developing countries in any thematic area or field of research are eligible. The program will support consortia that consist of at least a Swiss research institution, a research partner in the Global South/East and a non-research implementation partner (government, civil society, private sector). French Global Environment Facility — Sustainable Cooling and Air Conditioning
The French Global Environment Facility (FFEM) launches a new call for projects to support innovations for “Sustainable Cold Production and Air Conditioning” in developing countries. Proposed projects should focus the development of sustainable cooling or air conditioning technologies and approaches, for example, “natural” refrigerants, which are more energy efficient. Projects may be proposed in connection with the transfer of skills and technologies through capacity building programs. Eligibility extends to developing countries, with priority given to applicants from the African continent. Funding ranges from €500 thousand to €3 million per project. CRDF Global — Biorisk Management
CRDF Global announces the Biorisk Management Engagement Grant (BMEG) Competition. The goal of the competition is to provide support for biorisk management activities, such as laboratory design, repairs and maintenance of equipment, workshops and trainings at academic and industrial institutions in the MENA region. Projects related to challenges posed by Covid-19 will also be considered. Finalists will be awarded US$9 thousand. African Academy of Sciences — Grand Challenges Africa Transition to Scale Funding
With funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida), the African Academy of Sciences announces follow-on and scale up funding to help Africa achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. The call is focused on solutions targeting healthcare and other developmental problems in the African Continent. Funding is based on the applicants’ budget for scale: Scale 1 – up to US$250 thousand for 24 months, Scale 2 – up to US$500 thousand for 36 months, Scale 3&4 – up to US$1 million. British Council — Newton Fund Institutional Links with Mexico
The Newton Institutional Links provides grants for research and innovation collaboration between the UK and Mexico. Subject areas for the collaborative research include local development challenges such as extreme weather conditions, access to affordable health care, food and energy security, among others. Proposals are submitted jointly by a principal investigator in the UK with a principal investigator in Mexico. Grants range from £50 thousand to £300 thousand over two years. European Union and the Government of India — India-EU Joint Call on Integrated Local Energy Systems
The EU-India Clean Energy and Climate Partnership seeks to strengthen international cooperation in renewable energy research and innovation. Proposals should develop and demonstrate novel energy solutions for higher energy efficiency. The project must be carried out by a consortium of at least three organizations from India and three entities from Europe. DG Trésor — Innovative Solutions for the Reduction of Waste
DG Trésor invites companies to submit innovative ideas and project proposals for innovative solutions for the reduction and recovery of waste in the developing world. Up to 12 selected French SMEs and start-ups will receive up to €500 thousand to implement their project idea. Proposed projects can fall within the areas of general waste management, environmental management, energy recovery from waste, or agricultural waste management, among others. WIOMSA seeks innovative projects (demonstration and pilot projects) that address modern-day marine sustainability challenges to bridge the gap between marine research and innovation. The goal of the Innovation for Sustainability Grant program is to support the development and testing of concepts and new approaches that address and enhance the understanding of marine and coastal environmental issues. German Government — International Climate Initiative South Africa
Germany’s International Climate Initiative (IKI) supports projects with focus on transition to a decarbonised economy; as well as other initiatives with land use and climate change mitigation relevance in South Africa. The projects should have a funding volume between €12 million and €15 million each.
