U.S. Agency for International Development — Climate Change in the Eastern and Southern Caribbean

USAID will fund projects in support of its broad objectives under its program for Eastern and Southern Caribbean Science, Technology, Innovations, and Partnerships.  These objectives include one to reduce risks and adapt to the impacts of global climate change. The relevant countries in the program are Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname, and Trinidad and Tobago. Eligibility for funding is unrestricted.  The closing date for applications is 30 September 2017.   Link

UK Natural Environment Research Council — Building Resilience to Environmental Hazards

The NERC in coordination with other UK research councils calls for inter-disciplinary research on resilience to natural and man-made environmental hazards in the developing world. The focus is on how to build resilience in relation to both sudden and slow-onset environmental hazards (e.g., land degradation, deforestation, drought, hurricanes, and climate change). The lead applicant must be a UK research organization eligible for funding through NERC. Co-investigators can be researchers in low and middle-income countries, as well as researchers in international research organizations. Awards are expected not to exceed £200 thousand for projects ranging from 3-9 months, and exceptionally up to 12 months. The deadline for submitting proposals is 06 September 2016. Link

Lloyd’s — Science of Risk Prize 2016

The Science of Risk Prize for 2016 invites research papers in two categories: natural hazards; and systems modelling. Among other types of risks, Lloyd’s is interested in the impact and management of climate change. The competition offers prizes of £5 thousand for the best research paper in each category. Applicants should be working in a university department or government research organization. The closing date for submissions is 25 September 2016. Link

International Council for Science — Grants on Energy, Health, and Natural Disasters in African Cities

The International Council for Science (ICSU), in collaboration with partner science organizations, offers research grants on the inter-relationships among energy systems, health impacts of air pollution, land use and urban planning, adaptation to climate change, and disaster risks in African urban settings. Grants are up to €90 thousand for two years. Applications are welcome from early-career African scientists having no more than 10 years’ work experience following their PhDs or equivalent research experience. Global Observation of Forest and Land Cover Dynamics — GOFC-GOLD Training Program

Global Observation of Forest and Land Cover Dynamics (GOFC-GOLD) is an international program to provide space-based and in-situ observations of forests and other land cover. These observations are intended to support sustainable management of natural resources and to help provide a better understanding of the terrestrial carbon budget. In association with START, GOFC-GOLD will hold its fifth data initiative in October 2016 for advanced training on access, management, use, and application of earth observation data. The training will be offered at the Sirindhorn Center for Geo-Informatics, Space Krenovation Park, in Thailand. The course is designed for young scientists associated with the GOFC-GOLD regional networks, especially in Southeast Asia. However, other scientists are welcome to submit a request to become a Fellow. The deadline for applications is 19 August 2016. Link

U.S. Department of State — Youth Debates in India on Climate Change

The North India Office of the U.S. Embassy New Delhi invites program proposals for a series of university-level youth debates on climate change and related environmental issues. The aim is to raise awareness about the complex conversations in this subject among college youth in the Indian states and territories of Delhi, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, and Uttar Pradesh. The U.S. government will make one grant for between US$50 thousand to US$70 thousand to an institution of higher education or a nonprofit NGO. Funding Opportunity ND-NOFO-16-105. U.S. Department of State — Morocco Green Growth Climate Challenge

The U.S. Department of State will make one grant for approximately US$400 thousand to assist Morocco with a competition to help build capacity to mitigate the impacts of climate change through the use of clean energy and energy-efficient technologies. The challenge will feature small grants for workshops on energy technologies, public policy, and business development. Applications to manage the challenge are invited from non-profit NGOs; private, public, and state institutions of higher education; and for-profit organizations and businesses in the U.S. and elsewhere (e.g., Morocco). V. Kann Rasmussen Foundation — Climate Change and Environment

The V. Kann Rasmussen Foundation makes grants to address threats caused by climate change, unsustainable consumption, and loss of biodiversity. The Foundation works primarily in the USA on issues that are national and international. Funding that is external to the U.S. must be multinational and not focus on any specific country, region, or continent.­­ The next deadline for letters of inquiry is 14 September 2016. Link

LEDS Global Partnership — Fellowships on Low-Emission Development Strategies

The LEDS Global Partnership offers fellowships for individuals and teams of practitioners to be embedded with leading institutions to learn practical lessons that they can apply to low-emission development strategies and/or nationally determined contributions in their home countries. Fellowships will be awarded to individuals or groups of national or sub-national government officials who play a significant role within LEDS development or implementation. This pilot phase of the program will fund one fellow from each of Africa, Asia, and Latin America and the Caribbean. The application deadline has been extended to 15 July 2016. Link

Research Council of Norway — Norway-China Research on Hazardous Substances and Pollution

The Research Council of Norway sponsors the MILJØFORSK program (2016-2025) to generate new knowledge about biodiversity, cultural environments, ecosystem services, hazardous substances, and pollution. The current call for proposals will focus on pollution sources, inputs, and spread – including the re-mobilisation of hazardous substances as a result of climate change – as well as the effects of pollution impacts on the environment and health. Up to NOK 18 million will be available for projects that involve the participation of Chinese partners. The application deadline is 07 September 2016. Link
