U.S. Embassy Nairobi — Small Grants Program

The Ambassador’s Self-Help Fund (SSHF) provides small grants to registered self-help groups, youth groups, community based organizations, and specific types of educational institutions and medical facilities in Kenya. The Fund supports projects that assist special populations; actively protect, preserve, or restore the environment; support community water supply; or create innovative or unique income-generating activity within a community. Funding will range from US$1,000 to US$10 thousand; however, the average grant awarded is US$3,000 to US$7,000. The Embassy encourages applications from Kenya-based organizations, institutions, and individuals. They may partner with U.S.-based entities, but the grant recipient must be based in Kenya. OPEC Fund — Annual Award for Development

The OPEC Fund honors outstanding contributions to sustainable development. Each year, the annual award recognizes a different theme of particular relevance to global development. In 2023, the theme is “Gender Equality and Climate Action”. The prize is US$100 thousand. The nominee must be a charitable organization. Deadline to submit nominations is 12 May 2023. Village Capital — Ecosystem Restoration

Village Capital supports 10-12 impact-driven startups building locally viable ecosystem restoration solutions in Africa. The program addresses entrepreneurs championing forest restoration, biodiversity conservation, wetland restoration and water conservation,  sustainable agriculture and climate tech solutions. Participants will receive mentorship and access to an investment analyst. Eligibility extends to (for-profit) startups building locally viable ecosystem restoration solutions. United States Agency for International Development — Climate Resilient Agriculture

The United States Agency for International Development in Vietnam (USAID) seeks applications from qualified entities to implement the USAID Climate Resilient Agriculture in the Mekong Delta. The purpose of the program is to advance low-emissions, climate-resilient agricultural livelihoods combined with biodiversity conservation to support carbon sequestration, healthy ecosystems, and resilience of vulnerable communities. USAID intends to provide up to US$48 million in total funding over a five-year period. Eligibility is not restricted. The closing date for applications is 26 June 2023. Link

Canada Fund for Local Initiatives — Community Projects in the Philippines

The Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI) invites proposals that meet the needs of local communities in the Philippines. CFLI provides funding to projects that implement environment and climate action projects focusing on adaptation and mitigation, water management, and other thematic priorities. The average contribution is C$30 thousand. Eligibility extends to not-for-profit local, national or community-based organizations. The deadline for submission is 28 April 2023. CFLI Philippines

French Institute for Development Research — Climate Education in the Caribbean

The French Research Institute for Development (IRD) seeks to improve primary, secondary and higher education on geohazards and climate change in the Caribbean region. The grant recipient needs to develop teaching materials and tools for basic and higher levels education and be able to develop a regional database to facilitate the sharing among institutions in the Caribbean region. Canada Fund for Local Initiatives — Community Projects in Iraq

The Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI) invites proposals that meet the needs of local communities in Iraq. CFLI provides funding to projects that implement environment and climate action projects focusing on adaptation and mitigation, water management, and other thematic priorities. The average contribution is C$20 thousand to C$40 thousand per project. Eligibility extends to not-for-profit local, national or community-based organizations. Canadian International Development Research Center — Climate Emergency

The Canadian International Development Research Center (IDRC) seeks concept notes to support new research that responds to the intersection of two global challenges of the climate emergency and closing civic spaces in the Global South. Sustainable Ocean Alliance and Environmental Defense Fund — Climate-Resilient Fisheries Fellowship

Sustainable Ocean Alliance and Environmental Defense Fund offers a Fellowship to early-career entrepreneurs and organizations working on projects anywhere in the world that benefit fisheries and promote community resilience to climate change. Fellows receive grant funding and special access to mentorship and online courses to develop new leadership and technical skills. Swedish Research Council — Research Grants in Development Research

The Swedish Research Council funds research projects relevant to the fight against poverty and for sustainable development in low income countries. The applicant for a research project grant must be an individual researcher. Research cooperation between scientists in Sweden and scientists in selected low and middle-income countries is encouraged. The maximum amount is SEK 1.5 million per year for a period of four years.
