The Nordic Africa Institute (NAI) provides funding to social science researchers from Sub-Saharan Africa for short-term collaborative assignments at the NAI in Uppsala, Sweden. Female researchers are especially encouraged to apply. The scholarship includes travel (economy class), accommodation, a subsistence allowance of SEK400 per day plus an installation grant of SEK2,500. The thematic research programs include the topics of economic growth, poverty alleviation, sustainable livelihoods, climate change, and sustainable development, among others. Earth Journalism Network — Reporting on Climate Change Adaptation in the Bay of Bengal
The Earth Journalism Network (EJN) offers grants to journalists based in eastern India and coastal Bangladesh to report on critical issues related to climate change. ENJ seeks in-depth stories that focus on climate and environmental change, such as climate-induced migration, agricultural and water issues or food security in the Bay of Bengal region. EJN expects to award at least 10 grants averaging US$1,300 each. Early- or mid-career journalists from print, web, radio and television are eligible. European Commission — Conservation of Forest Ecosystems in West Africa
The European Commission seeks to enhance climate resilience in Sierra Leone and Guinea. Through this call for proposals the EC invites projects that aim to protect the Outamba-Kilimi National Park (Sierra Leone), Kuru Hills Forest Reserve (Sierra Leone), Pinselli and Soyah Classified Forests (Guinea) and the buffer zones and forest corridors that inter-connect them. Grants requested under this call for proposals must fall between €1.45 million and €2.9 million. Efficiency for Access Coalition — Research and Development Fund
The Efficiency for Access Coalition (EforA) seeks applications for the Efficiency for Access Research and Development Fund. The Coalition seeks projects that develop enabling technologies or products for off-grid and weak grid areas. Start-ups and micro-sized organizations can apply for grants of between £50 thousand and £300 thousand to be used for feasibility studies, industrial research, or experimental development. The applicant must be a legally registered business, academic organisation, non-profit, or research and technology organization. There are no geographical restrictions. Climate Tracker — Sustainable Energy in Africa
Climate Tracker seeks applicants for a 8-week-long investigative reporting scholarship program. Fellows will receive training on climate journalism and have the chance to refine their journalism skills. Six African journalists will be selected to cover the Sustainable Energy for All Forum in Rwanda (May 2020). Applicants have to write and publish a story focusing on energy access, clean cooking, energy transition, or climate change in order to apply. Articles have to be submitted by 18 March 2020. Getty Images is committed to evolving the visual narratives that define the global climate crisis in the commercial and editorial space. Together with Climate Visuals, Getty Images launches the Climate Visuals Grants which aim to support the creation of compelling and emotionally engaging imagery that explores the complex and layered climate crisis. Photojournalists from around the world are invited to submit projects with a compelling visual narrative based primarily on documentary still images. Innovate4Climate seeks innovators, startups and entrepreneurs who develop climate-smart solutions with potential for transformative impact in reducing emissions and/or increasing resilience to climate change. Solutions can be goods, services (e.g. financial instruments, risk management mechanisms), technological solutions, or innovative business models. The competition aims to support climate-smart cities with innovations for energy, food/agriculture, waste/water, and two additional categories.The call for solutions will close on 01 March 2020. European Commission — Defense of Environmental Rights in Peru
The European Commission aims to strengthen environmental protection and mitigation of climate change by protecting environmental human rights and their defenders. This call focuses on (1) Promoting the transition to a low carbon economy in the Peruvian Amazon; and (2) Improving compliance with Environmental Human Rights (DHA) for better environmental governance. Projects with focus on low-carbon transition can apply for funding of between €500 thousand and €805 thousand. Projects with focus on environmental human rights can apply for funding up to €382 thousand. The JK VISIONARIES award recognizes organizations that are working to improve lives in Latin America and the Caribbean. The award seeks sustainable solutions that solve people’s problems with new tools, methods, or techniques (possibly within one or more thematic areas of the Terra Viva Grant Directory) with the potential to be replicated in other countries.
