U.S. National Academy of Sciences — Partnerships for Enhanced Engagement in Research, Cycle 8
PEER invites scientists in developing countries to work with U.S. collaborators in research and capacity building on priority topics that include environmental contaminants, agricultural productivity and food security, biodiversity conservation, water security, low-carbon development, fisheries assessments, and others. The priorities are different for each PEER focus area (i.e., varying by regions and countries). Applicants must be based at academic institutions, non-profit organizations, or government-managed research laboratories, centers, or institutes in the eligible countries. World Bank — Ideas for Action Competition 2019
Ideas for Action is a knowledge platform of the World Bank Group and the Zicklin Center for Business Ethics Research at the Wharton School. The annual Ideas for Action competition seeks innovative ideas and actionable projects to support the implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Past winners include water solutions for better fish farm yields, women-led business models to improve sustainable access to energy, web based solutions for agriculture processes, and many more. Teams must consist of two to six members and may be formed across different schools, institutions, companies, or countries. Students and young professionals between the ages of 18-35 years from around the world are invited to participate. The winners of the competition present their ideas at the annual meeting of the World Bank Group, receive support from a project incubator and coaching. Chivas Venture — Funding for Social Entrepreneurs
Chivas Venture provides start-ups and social entrepreneurs with project funding. Past projects include plastic waste, agriculture, and other environmental or humanitarian themes. 20 Finalists will participate in a 3-day Accelerator Program in London and the winners share a total of US$1 million in funding. International Network for Government Science Advice — Research in Support of the Sustainable Development Goals
The International Network for Government Science Advice (INGSA) is offering six professional development and research grants for 2019 on the role of scientific evidence and advice in support of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. Grants of up to to €15 thousand per project will support early-to-mid career researchers or policy practitioners on this theme in eligible low- and middle-income countries. Applicants must hold a PhD at time of application, or have at least five years full-time equivalent experience in research or as a public policy professional (e.g. advice, analysis, implementation, evaluation). European Commission — Solutions to Improve Health in Cities
The EC calls for visionary and integrated solutions (e.g. therapy gardens, urban living rooms, creative streets, city farms) to increase citizens’ health and well-being in cities. These solutions should address reducing the exposure to climate-related risks, pollution (including noise), and environmental stress, among other factors. The Commission accepts requests in the range of €10 million. Climate Tracker — Writing Competition on Climate Change
Climate Tracker seeks young writers from around the world who want to make a big impact in their countries by writing about the effects of meat consumption on climate change. The 2 best writers will get a chance to attend the Convention on Biological Diversity negotiations in Egypt (November 2018). Participants have to write an article about effects of meat consumption on climate change and what needs to change in their country and publish the article in the media, e.g. newspaper, magazine, online news site, etc. To participate, articles have to be submitted by 12 October 2018.
