Institute of Current World Affairs — Fellowship Program 2023

The Institute of Current World Affairs (ICWA) makes grants to support fellows who carry out self-designed independent studies for a minimum of two years in the developing world. Fellows must hold the promise of enriching public life in the United States by enhancing the understanding of foreign countries, cultures and trends, therefore candidates must show strong and credible ties to U.S. society. Proposals in the fields of environment, climate change, sustainability and conservation are welcome. Candidates who seek fellowships may reside in any developing country. Curtin University — PhD Stipends in Marine Bioacoustics

The Centre for Marine Science and Technology at Curtin University offers 4 PhD stipends in marine bioacoustics. The  stipends are part of a 4-year research project entitled “The Quieter Western Indian Ocean” (QWIO). Each stipend includes an international tuition fee scholarship for 3.5 years. In addition, the stipend covers annual living costs (total €31 thousand). Students would ideally be citizens of Comoros, France, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mozambique, Seychelles, Somalia, Tanzania, or South Africa. Government of The Netherlands — Chinese Scholarship Program

The Sino-Dutch Bilateral Exchange Scholarship is a Dutch-Chinese scholarship program for Dutch and Chinese students. Each student is offered a scholarship to study or do research in the Netherlands for at least one academic year. The scholarship consists of a contribution of €16 thousand per year towards the total costs of a study or research. The scholarship program focuses on 3rd-year bachelor, master or PhD students. Alfred Wegner Institute — Training in Observational Oceanography

The Alfred Wegner Institute hosts the Nippon Foundation-POGO Centre of Excellence. The program provides training and career development in observational oceanography, using facilities at Helgoland and Sylt in the North Sea. The next training program is open to participants from developing and emerging countries. Trainees must have at least a first degree in science. Preference will be given to applicants who currently hold a position in a research or academic institution in a developing country, and who anticipate returning to the country after completion of the training. Asia Research Institute — Asian Graduate Student Fellowship

The Asia Research Institute (ARI) invites applications from citizens of Asian countries for the Asian Graduate Student Fellowship. This opportunity includes a virtual fellowship and an in-person fellowship. Selected participants will undergo an intensive six-week program of independent research, training in academic writing, and mentorship meetings. Participants will take part in an intensive course on English academic writing. The fellowship program is open to junior scholars in the humanities and social sciences undertaking research focused on Southeast Asia. Wild Animal Initiative — Fellowship Program

Wild Animal Initiative invites early-career scientists to apply to a fellowship program. Fellowships are offered to individuals to conduct wild animal welfare research that is explicitly focused on combining animal welfare and the study of wild animals. Wild Animal Initiative offers a stipend of up to US$60 thousand per year for salary and living expenses. Eligible candidates can request an additional allowance of up to US$25 thousand per year for field work, consumables and other research related costs. German Federal Environmental Foundation — PhD Fellowships

The German Federal Environmental Foundation (DBU) offers 60 research fellowships per year to young scientists in Germany and internationally across all disciplines of environmental protection. The funding period is 36 months with a monthly stipend of €1,500. DBU welcomes subjects of international importance, although the work has to be done mainly in Germany, and with a clear reference to the German environmental situation. World Academy of Sciences — Postdoctoral Fellowships for Early-Career Researchers

In partnership with the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB), TWAS invites early-career researchers from 21 Least Developed Member Countries to apply to the IsDB-TWAS Postdoctoral Fellowship Program. The fellowship will support research related to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, providing recipients with high-level training in areas relevant to sustainability science. University of Pennsylvania — Visiting Fellowship for African Scholars

The Penn Development Research Initiative (DevLab at the University of Pennsylvania) seeks to build capacity for rigorous research on pressing policy challenges facing low- and middle-income countries, by providing training and research opportunities for emerging researchers. The university invites researchers from Sub-Saharan Africa to apply for a semester-long fellowship for the 2023 Fall semester (September – December 2023). Visiting fellows will have the opportunity to audit doctoral-level classes, carry out independent research and present their research.
