The Civil Society Scholar Awards (CSSA) provide grants to doctoral students and university faculty members from Africa, Eurasia, Eastern Europe, MENA region, Central Asia, South Asia and the Caribbean (eligible countries are listed in the announcement). Subject areas include sustainable development and natural resource management, among others. Eligibility extends to PhD students of relevant fields studying at universities inside or outside of their home country; or full-time faculty members (minimum of a Master’s degree) teaching at universities in their home country. Society of Wetland Scientists — Graduate Research Fellowship
The SWS Wetland Ambassadors Program is a student research program that provides graduate students with the opportunity to travel to another country and conduct wetland research. A grant of up to US$5 thousand will be awarded by SWS, while hosting institutions may provide for lab costs, meal plans, or room and board during the internship. The applicant must currently be enrolled in a M.S. or Ph.D. program related to wetland science (e.g. biology, environmental science, environmental engineering, etc.). Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture — Doctoral Research Scholarships
The Social and Environmental Trade-offs in African Agriculture (Sentinel) Project, funded by the UKRI Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF), aims at building the capacity of African and UK research organizations to address trade-offs between economic, environmental and social outcomes for future agricultural development. For that reason, RUFORUM makes 20 research scholarships to PhD students to undertake research in areas of relevance to the Project. A minimum of 15 research projects have to take place in Ghana, Ethiopia, and Zambia. U.S. Department of Agriculture — Borlaug Cocoa Fellowships 2019
The USDA invites applications for the 2019 Borlaug Cocoa Fellowships. The program aims to provide fellows with the skills and knowledge in the production and marketing of cocoa and cocoa products. Fellows from eligible countries in West Africa, Asia, and Latin America and the Caribbean work with a mentor at USDA’s Agricultural Research Service or a U.S. university for up to 12 weeks. The U.S. mentor later visits the fellow’s home institution to continue collaboration. The research priorities vary by region and country. The application deadline is 31 December 2018. Chinese Academy of Sciences — PhD Fellowships in China 2019
The Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) jointly invite applications for the CAS-TWAS President’s PhD Fellowship Programme to pursue PhD studies in China. The participating institutions are the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences; the University of Science and Technology of China; and CAS institutes around China. Eligible fields of study include agricultural sciences, various fields of agricultural sciences, biology, and other areas of the natural sciences and engineering. Organization for Tropical Studies — Research Scholarships 2019
The OTS manages a research fellowship program to support field research in tropical biology and related fields. The program offers three types of awards: pilot awards for exploratory research; thesis research fellowships; and ECTS-GS fellowships. Most awards are restricted to three OTS field stations in Costa Rica. Exceptions are one annual fellowship for research at the Cocha Cashu field station in Peru, and the Hovore-Horn Entomology awards in any Latin American country. Overseas Development Institute — Fellowships 2019-21
The Overseas Development Institute (ODI) is an independent think tank on international development and humanitarian issues. The ODI Fellowship Scheme appoints highly qualified postgraduate economists and statisticians through a competitive selection process. The fellowship scheme is open to candidates of all nationalities who have a master’s degree or PhD in economics, statistics or a related field. Suitable specialised qualifications at postgraduate level include agricultural economics, environmental economics, water and climate, among others. Conservation International — Indigenous and Traditional Peoples Conservation Fellowship 2019-2020
Conservation International (CI) offers the Indigenous Leaders Conservation Fellowship to leaders from indigenous and traditional peoples. For the 2019-2020 fellowship year, the Indigenous Leaders Conservation Fellowship will support two distinct fellowship tracks: the Indigenous Women’s Fellowship and the Emerging Leaders Fellowship. Wageningen University — Climate Smart Agriculture in East Africa
The Climate Smart Agriculture, East Africa (CSA-EA) program offers opportunities for the placement of two PhD students to be enrolled in one of the graduate schools of Wageningen University. The selected PhD students are expected to spend about 18 months in Wageningen (Netherlands) and 30 months in East Africa (Kenya, Tanzania, and/or Uganda).
