WWF-US supports women conservationists in the Congo Basin for short-term training and for academic and technical degrees in conservation. Applicants must be citizens and permanent residents of Central African Republic, Dem Rep Congo, Gabon, or Rep Congo. Most professional development grants are for less than six months and are funded up to US$5 thousand. Most academic grants are for one year and up to US$10 thousand for study anywhere in the world. Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation — Doctoral Scholarships 2017
Each year, the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation awards up to fifteen scholarships to Canadian and international doctoral candidates pursuing research related to one of its four founding themes, one of which is “People and their Natural Environment.” This theme includes studies of a social, economic or political nature that lead to the identification, evaluation, or dissemination of sustainable environmental practices. It also includes an interest in environmental security at the global level, and in the link between healthy ecosystems, communities, and individuals. Candidates must be nominated by the Canadian or international institution where they wish to study or are currently studying. Universities can nominate a candidate from their institution who is pursuing doctoral studies at another university. The deadline for submissions by the universities is 09 December 2016. Link
Belgium’s University Commission for Development — Scholarships and Training Grants 2017-2018
The French-language universities of Belgium award 150 scholarships and about 70 training grants each year in the ARES program to applicants from developing countries. Subjects include environmental management and several others. Eligibility requirements are defined by age, previous education, and nationality. The eligible countries are Benin, Bolivia, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cambodia, Cameroon, Cuba, Dem Rep Congo, Ecuador, Ethiopia (only for courses in English), Haiti, Indonesia, Madagascar, Mali, Morocco, Niger, Peru, Philippines, Rwanda, Senegal, and Vietnam. Michigan State University — Graduate Studies for Rwandans in Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources
With funding from the U.S. government, the Borlaug Higher Education Agricultural Research and Development (BHEARD) Program is implemented by Michigan State University. Rwanda is one of eleven countries for scholarship support under the BHEARD program. The scholarships will support master’s or PhD studies for Rwandans at regional universities in Africa, beginning August 2017 or January 2018. Applications are invited from the University of Rwanda (College of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine), and from Rwanda’s Ministry of Agriculture. Course work will be undertaken at a regional university, and the student’s research project will be conducted in Rwanda. The application deadline is 30 October 2016. Link
Coady International Institute — Women’s Leadership 2017
The Global Change Leaders Program is a seven-week education program to enable women from developing countries to strengthen their leadership capacities at the Coady Institute, affiliated with St Francis Xavier University in Canada. The program offers successful candidates a full scholarship that includes tuition, travel, accommodations, and meals. Applicants should have at least four years of demonstrated leadership experience in fields such as food security, environment, inclusive economic development, and others. Royal Agricultural College — Land and Food Fellowships for Africans 2017
The UK’s Royal Agricultural College (RAC) offers fellowships to African students enrolled in its masters programs in subjects of rural development, sustainable agriculture and food security, business management, and international food and agri-business. The RAC seeks applicants who have experience in agriculture and related subjects; an interest in land reform; and a desire to make a strategic and sustainable contribution to Africa’s development. The Masdar Institute of Science and Technology in Abu Dhabi provides a cross-disciplinary program of study and research focused on sustainable technologies and policies. Masdar offers full financial scholarships to qualified candidates for masters and doctoral degree programs. Subject areas include water and environmental engineering, among others. The Baillet Latour Antarctica Fellowship of €150 thousand over two years provides young scientists with the opportunity to conduct research in East Antarctica. The program is open to young researchers in atmospheric sciences, glaciology, and geosciences and microbiology (excluding marine microbiology). Applications are welcome from doctoral researchers and post-doctoral researchers in any country who have completed their PhD within the past 10 years. The application deadline is 15 September 2016. With funding from the U.S. government, the Borlaug Higher Education Agricultural Research and Development (BHEARD) Program supports long-term training of agricultural and food security researchers and policy advisors at master’s and doctoral levels. The program currently includes scholarships for staff at selected agricultural and meteorological institutions in Mali to pursue graduate studies in meteorology.
