Copernicus Masters is an international innovation competition that honors the best solutions using earth observation data and applications to solve global challenges. The Environment, Energy & Health Challenge, sponsored by DLR, seeks innovative solutions that use earth observation (EO) data to support sustainable management of the planet’s limited natural resources and foster human well-being. The winner of the DLR challenge receives €5 thousand. All participants have the chance to win an additional €10 thousand if chosen as the overall Copernicus winner. Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute — Research in Tropical Forests
The ForestGEO Grants Program supports research that uses forest data from the program’s field sites. Priority will be given to early-career researchers, and researchers with less access to other institutional funds. Social scientists and natural scientists of all nationalities are eligible. Applicants do not need to be associated with a site prior to applying, but each applicant will need to contact a site Principal Investigator (linked from the announcement) prior to submitting a proposal. The Asia-Pacific Network for Sustainable Forest Management and Rehabilitation (APFNet) provides grants for field demonstration projects which showcase best practices in forest rehabilitation and management in APEC member countries. APFNet-funded projects are aimed at rehabilitating degraded forests and increasing forest cover, promoting sustainable forest management to enhance the ecological function and health of forests, and enhancing the contribution of forests to socio-economic development and local livelihoods. APFNet supports small projects that apply for less than US$10 thousand as well as regular projects with budgets of up to US$500 thousand. The proposed project cannot exceed 36 months in duration. Legacy Landscapes Fund — Conservation of Terrestrial Landscapes and Buffer Zones
Legacy Landscapes Fund announces its first open call for proposals. Legacy Landscapes Fund (LLF) is a grant-making institution focused on the world’s most important protected areas and their buffer zones. “Legacy Landscapes” (LL) are terrestrial landscapes covering a contiguous area of at least 200 thousand hectares (2000 km²) that are ecologically largely intact and of global significance. LLF’s Sustaining Grant program supports the LL with a $15 million grant in tranches of $1 million per year over 15 years. For its Sustaining Grants, LLF requires a minimum co-financing of $5 million. The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) seeks to sustainably commercialize non-timber forest products in order to increase alternative income sources, improve natural resource management practices in Zimbabwe. The overall aim of this activity is to improve the resilience of vulnerable and marginalized communities (particularly women and youth). USAID will support both agricultural and environmental objectives that would positively impact climate change adaptation, sustainable forestry, biodiversity protection, and the mitigation of human-wildlife conflict. Siemenpuu Foundation calls for project proposals to support the biocultural rights of indigenous communities and their biocultural life-heritages as adapted to their local environments.
