AuthorAID — Small Grants for Researchers in Developing Countries 2017

AuthorAID announces its first round of small grants in 2017 to support researchers in developing countries with travel and workshops. In this first round for 2017, AuthorAID plans to award five travel grants (US$1,500 each) and five workshop grants (US$2,500 each). AuthorAID posts the list of eligible developing countries. The deadline to apply for travel grants is 29 January 2017. The deadline to apply for workshop grants is 05 February 2017. Link

European Commission — Eastern Partnership Civil Society Forum

The Eastern Partnership Civil Society Forum announces its 3rd call for proposals. Projects should focus on advancing reforms in the Eastern Partnership countries (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, and Ukraine), with the aim of taking  a regional perspective. Among five working groups, WG3 has the theme of environment, climate change, and energy security. Grants will range from €10 thousand to €25 thousand.  Applications should include at least three Partnership countries. The application deadline is 29 January 2017. Link

World Bank — WeMENA Supporting Women Social Entrepreneurs

WeMENA announces a challenge to help women advance solutions across eight cities in the Middle East and North Africa to build resilience to climate change.  The cities are Alexandria, Amman, Beirut, Byblos, Cairo, Casablanca, Ramallah, and Tunis. The challenge categories include agriculture and food security; sustainable energy and the environment; water and sanitation; and several others. Participants in the challenge will receive business training, mentoring, and the chance to compete for a share of US$150 thousand in cash awards. The competition is open to women participating as individuals, as teams, or on behalf of a legal entity.  The deadline for submissions is 17 January 2017. Link

EarthCorps — International Program 2017

EarthCorps invites applications from emerging environmental leaders around the world to participate in an environmental service program in the USA. Participants from the USA and other countries take part in field projects such as tree planting, trail construction, stream restoration, and removal of invasive plants. Projects are located in the state of Washington (i.e., not Washington, DC). Applicants should be 18-28 years of age, with a university degree in an environmental field (or equivalent work experience), and speak conversational English. International participants receive a living stipend, health insurance, and accommodations with host families. However, each participant is responsible for her/his travel to Seattle, Washington.  Priority consideration will be given to applications received by 09 January 2017. Link

Biodiversity Indicators Partnership — Request for Proposals

The Convention on Biological Diversity adopted the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020 as a framework for the biodiversity-related conventions and for the UN system as a whole. The Biodiversity Indicators Partnership (BIP) calls for proposals addressing the Aichi Biodiversity Targets 1, 3, and 15. To fill gaps in these targets, the BIP will fund proposals for indicator development up to a maximum of £75 thousand per proposal. The deadline for submissions is 31 January 2017. Link

Climate Strategies Accelerator — Breakthroughs to End the Age of Oil

The Climate Strategies Accelerator (CSA) aims to identify and support leaders with big ideas to address the complex problem of climate change. The 2017 theme is “end the age of oil.”  CSA selects prototype projects and program leaders in progressive stages, beginning with a Breakthrough Lab of intensive networking and proposal development.  At the end of the Breakthrough Lab, the CSA may choose to invest in one or more candidates, who would then become program leaders, receiving US$1-2 million per year for a three-year grant period to pursue their ideas. The CSA welcomes applications worldwide.  The application deadline to participate in the the Breakthrough Lab is 31 January 2017.  Link

Suranaree University of Technology — PhD Scholarships in Agricultural Technology for ASEAN Countries 2017

Suranaree University of Technology in Thailand offers PhD scholarships in various fields of studies, including in Agricultural Technology. Eligibility for scholarships extends to nationals of ASEAN countries (Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, and Vietnam). Applicants must old a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a relevant field, and be proficient in English. The application deadline is 31 January 2017. Link

Abdulla Al Ghurair Foundation for Education — STEM Scholars Program

The Abdulla Al Ghurair Foundation for Education offers scholarships to young Arab citizens for university studies in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) at any of the Foundation’s partner universities.  Applicants should be ages 15-30 and demonstrate past high academic achievement, as well as financial need.  The application deadline is 15 January 2017.  Link

Cheng-Long Wetlands — International Environmental Art Project 2017

The Cheng-Long Wetlands are located in a rural area on the south-central coast of Taiwan. To call attention to the changing global environment, with a particular focus on conservation of the Cheng-Long Wetlands, artists from all countries are invited to send a proposal for a site-specific outdoor sculpture that will raise public awareness and enlist people to take action. Selected artists will receive NT$60 thousand (about US$2 thousand), airfare, accommodations, food, local transportation, volunteer help, and free local natural and recycled materials. The deadline for proposals is 20 January 2017. Link

MIT Center for Collective Intelligence — Climate CoLab 2017

The MIT Climate CoLab organizes contests to solicit the world’s best ideas to prevent and adapt to climate change. Some contests pose social and political questions, while others focus on issues in science and technology.  Each year, the contest winners are invited to a conference at MIT’s campus in the USA, where a pool of prize funding is shared among the best ideas. Current contests include one on managing and reducing carbon contributions, with submission deadline on 20 January 2017. Another contest focuses on anticipating climate hazards, with deadline on 10 February 2017. Link
