Climate Story Lab — Training Program in Lagos

The Climate Story Lab is a training program with focus on storytellers in Nigeria and West Africa, whose works are rooted in climate storytelling with strong focus on the region. Projects should be non-fiction films, immersive and interactive stories or podcasts. Fiction films with a clear climate perspective can also be considered. Projects must be in production, post-production or distribution and outreach stages. Applicants must be 18 years or older and be a national of any West African country. Save Our Seas Foundation — Ocean Storytelling Photography Grant

The Save Our Seas Foundation (SOS) seeks photographers who tell conservation stories about the oceans. The call is not limited underwater photography. Story topics can range from the animals themselves, to fisheries to the communities whose lives are intertwined with marine life. Four successful grantees will receive a fully-funded assignment to shoot a conservation photo story on location, under direct mentorship from professional photographers from National Geographic. Award includes US$2 thousand cash prize, day rate for 3 to 4-week shoot, a year of mentorship, and logistical costs for shoot covered. SOS seeks to support early-career storytellers, therefore, applicants must have no more than 5 years of professional experience in any photography related discipline. Climate Tracker seeks journalists from Africa to join their COP28 team. Selected journalists will join Climate Tracker to cover the global climate summit in-person and virtually. United Nations Sustainable Development Goals — Environmental Photographer of the Year

The Environmental Photographer of the Year competition showcases the most inspirational environmental photography from around the world. One award of £10 thousand will be granted to a single image that furthers people’s understanding of the causes and effects of environmental change and social inequality, or highlights solutions to the climate and ecological emergency. Science for Africa Foundation — Africa Science Journalism Awards

The Africa Science Journalism Awards (ASJA) recognizes and honors excellent reporting on science and innovation in Africa and aims to improve and increase coverage of science on the continent. The award will be given to African journalists whose stories cover health, climate change and environment, and/or agriculture. Prizes range from US$5,000 to US$1,500. The award is open to journalists and media houses, editors, and scientists. Stories must be informative and highlight how science is improving the lives of Africans. Global Biodiversity Information Facility — Data Papers on Soil Biodiversity

The Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) announces a new call for authors to submit and publish data papers on soil biodiversity. Papers will be published in a special collection of Biodiversity Data Journal. The publisher Pensoft will waive the article processing fee (normally €650) for the first 40 accepted data paper manuscripts. The deadline to receive proposals is 22 September 2023. Earth Journalism Network — Story Grants to Support Indigenous or Ethnic Minority Journalists

The Earth Journalism Network (EJN) offers reporting grants to journalists from Indigenous and ethnic minority groups to support the production of in-depth stories that will call attention to climate justice, biodiversity and other issues related to the rights and well-being of Indigenous peoples and communities. EJN plans to make 20-25 story grants of up to US$2000 each to selected journalists from the Asia-Pacific region. Earth Journalism Network — Reporting on Air Pollution

The Earth Journalism Network (EJN) invites journalists from Nairobi (Kenya) to apply for a story grant to report on air pollution in the city. Journalists are encouraged to examine the key sources of air pollution in Nairobi and its impacts on the local environment, economy and health, among other topics. U.S. Department of State — Combating Wildlife Trafficking through Outreach and Awareness

The U.S. Government announces an open competition for organizations interested in submitting applications for projects that counter trafficking of endangered and protected species for use in traditional medicine globally. The U.S. Government will mobilize resources, and strengthen operational capacity to combat nature crimes, including wildlife and timber trafficking. The program goal is to engage civil society and/or local NGOs in the prevention of trafficking of endangered and protected species. Funding ranges from US$500 thousand to US$1 million.
