The Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences is the country’s focal point for the Global Taxonomy Initiative (GTI). Qualified individuals from developing countries supported by Belgian Development Cooperation can apply for study visits in Belgium to train in taxonomic projects and biodiversity assessment projects that have strong taxonomic components. Priority is given to projects in the following countries: Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Dem Rep Congo, Guinea, Mali, Morocco, Mozambique, Niger, Palestinian Territories, Rwanda, Senegal, Tanzania, and Uganda. Royal Bank of Canada — Blue Water Project 2017
The RBC’s Blue Water Project makes grants for watershed protection and safe drinking water in two programs. (i) The Community Action Grants are up to $10 thousand for local and community organizations in Canada, USA, and the Caribbean. (ii) Leadership Grants ranging from $10 thousand to $100 thousand are available in North America and other countries where RBC does business (including China, Hong Kong, Singapore, United Arab Emirates, Bahamas, Barbados, Cayman Islands, Chile, and Uruguay). U.S. Agency for International Development — Water Innovation Technologies in Jordan
USAID aims to assist Jordan with water-saving technologies and practices. The measures include interventions for safe water collection and storage; improved public awareness about water conservation; incentives for financing water infrastructure; and others. The 5-year program will focus in communities most impacted by immigration, and it will also support water-conserving technologies in agriculture. Eligibility for funding is unrestricted. U.S. Department of State — Morocco Green Growth Climate Challenge
The U.S. Department of State will make one grant for approximately US$400 thousand to assist Morocco with a competition to help build capacity to mitigate the impacts of climate change through the use of clean energy and energy-efficient technologies. The challenge will feature small grants for workshops on energy technologies, public policy, and business development. Applications to manage the challenge are invited from non-profit NGOs; private, public, and state institutions of higher education; and for-profit organizations and businesses in the U.S. and elsewhere (e.g., Morocco). Qatar National Research Fund — Women in Science
The Qatar National Research Fund (QNRF), in partnership with CRDF Global, welcomes applications from Qatari and Qatar-born female PhD students and MSc graduates for the Women in Science fellowship. The selected WIS fellows will spend four months at a U.S. university department under the direction of leading female researchers for work in one of the following four topics: ecology of infectious diseases; environmental science; cyber security; or materials science in energy. European Commission (EC) — Support for Fisheries and Aquaculture in Algeria
The EC will make grants to strengthen organizational and operational capacity for fisheries and aquaculture in Algeria. Eligibility for funding extends to NGOs, public agencies, local authorities, cooperatives, enterprise groups, etc., in European countries and Algeria. International organizations are also eligible. MEETAfrica — Supporting Young African Entrepreneurs
MEETAfrica is a program to help Africans who have diplomas at European universities to establish innovative enterprises for agriculture, industry, and services in their home countries. The current call is for recent university graduates and early-career researchers from Algeria, Cameroon, Mali, Morocco, Senegal, and Tunisia who are currently resident in France or Germany. Candidates should be less than 35 years old and have a masters, doctorate, or post-doctorate. The deadline for applications is 15 September 2016. Link
European Maritime and Fisheries Fund — International Cooperation for Blue Economy
The EC’s Maritime and Fisheries Fund will support trans-national regional collaboration to improve the blue economy in sea basins important to Europe, i.e., the Atlantic, Baltic Sea, Black Sea, Mediterranean, and North Sea. Each consortium should focus on a specific blue-growth technology or value chain. Examples include biotechnology, aquaculture, coastal and marine tourism, tidal or offshore wind energy, and others. Each consortia will develop a strategic investment plan as well as bankable demonstration projects. Applicants established in certain non-EU countries (defined in the announcement) are eligible to participate in Blue Economy if they are necessary to achieve the objectives of the action. Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) — RONPAKU Fellowships for PhD Students 2017
The RONPAKU fellowships are a program of the JSPS to support students from Asia, the Middle East, and Africa to pursue PhD degrees from Japanese universities. Each fellow submits a research dissertation co-supervised by an advisor in Japan and an advisor in the fellow’s home country. The fellows do not pursue doctoral courses in Japan (i.e., dissertation only). RONPAKU will award about 20 fellowships across all subject areas. The application deadline is 24 August 2016 for submissions to RONPAKU from Japanese universities; applicants need to send their documents to their prospective Japanese advisors in advance of this deadline.
