In partnership with the Elsevier Foundation, TWAS calls for case studies which present issues and challenges for sustainable development through real-life situations. The contest is open to current TWAS and OWSD PhD Fellowship recipients. European Commission — Capacity to Address Extraordinary Disasters
The EC’s Directorate for Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection calls for projects which address temporary shortcomings of response capacities in extraordinary disasters. The objective is to establish “buffer capacities” to add stand-by availability of rapid response capacities. Included are responses to disasters caused by flooding and forest fires. In addition to EU member states, eligibility to participate extends to Iceland, Macedonia, Montenegro, Norway, Serbia, and Turkey. The deadline for submitting proposals is 06 February 2017. Link
Global Affairs Canada — Agri-Food Value Chains and Adaptation to Climate Change in Haiti
The Government of Canada calls for proposals to promote strengthened agri-food value chains and adaptation to climate change in Haiti. Areas that were severely affected by Hurricane Matthew require increased support to restore agricultural production capacity and infrastructure. Projects should focus on two or three of the departments of Artibonite, Sud, and Grand-Anse. Eligibility for funding extends to Canadian and non-Canadian organizations, including private-sector organizations. Grants will range from $3 million to $15 million. International Council for Science — IRDR Young Scientists Program
The International Council for Science, in collaboration with several partner organizations, invites applications for the IRDR (Integrated Research on Disaster Risk) Young Scientists Program. The program offers scientists under age 40 of any nationality the opportunity to engage with a global network of professionals and practitioners. Benefits include international linkages and the possibility to be invited for additional training. UK Newton Fund — Collaboration UK with Brazil on Urban Environments
With support by the Newton Fund, Innovate UK invites businesses to work with Brazilian partners on innovative urban development solutions in Brazil. Subject areas include management of urban water and sanitation, renewable energy, addressing natural disasters, and others. UK Met Office — Collaboration with Brazil in Climate Science
The Climate Science for Service Partnership Brazil (CSSP Brazil) announces grants for UK researchers on subjects of climate change and disaster risk in Brazil. The focal areas are models of vegetation dynamics; the use of in situ forest observations and measurements to evaluate models; the use of regional scale observations and measurements to evaluate models; and detection and attribution of impacts of climate change in Brazil. French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Sustainable Development — French Cooperation with Pacific Islands and Territories 2017
The government of France makes grants through a regional fund (Le Fonds Pacifique) for economic, social, and cultural collaboration in the Pacific region. Funding priorities include actions to address climate change and the prevention of natural disasters; food security; sanitation; and other thematic areas. Grants are up to €30 thousand per project, and up to a maximum of 50% of project costs. The Fund aims to make about 40 grants for 2017. MIT Center for Collective Intelligence — Climate CoLab
The MIT Climate CoLab organizes contests to invite the best ideas from around the world to prevent and adapt to climate change. A recently launched contest (“Anticipating Climate Hazards”) calls for ideas on how vulnerable communities can best prepare for climate-related hazards, and for new tools that can be used to incentivize early action. The Judges’ Choice Winner will receive an expenses-paid trip to present its winning proposal to the A2R Leadership Group of key global actors in building climate resilience. U.S. Agency for International Development — Climate Change in the Eastern and Southern Caribbean
USAID will fund projects in support of its broad objectives under its program for Eastern and Southern Caribbean Science, Technology, Innovations, and Partnerships. These objectives include one to reduce risks and adapt to the impacts of global climate change. The relevant countries in the program are Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname, and Trinidad and Tobago. BRICS Scientific, Technological, and Innovation Framework Programme — Pilot Call for Proposals 2016
The BRICS Scientific, Technological and Innovation Framework Programme announces a call for research proposals on priority areas which can best be addressed by a multinational approach. The multiple themes include water resources and pollution treatment; promotion of renewable energy and energy efficiency; and prevention and monitoring of natural disasters. The framework program is supported by funding organizations in Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. Proposals should include collaborators from at least three countries.
