U.S. Department of State — Scientist Exchange in the Lower Mekong Region
The U.S. Embassy in Bangkok announces funding in support of managing a Young Scientist Exchange Program where young scientists from the Lower Mekong countries (Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam) engage in exchange programs with participating institutes/research centers on issues deemed challenges for the region. They include issues of sustainable development and environment. Eligibility to apply extends to non-profit organizations. The program expects to make one grant for US$395 thousand. Human Development Innovation Fund — Grassroots Projects in Tanzania
The Human Development Innovation Fund (HDIF) is funded by the UK government to create social impact in education, health and water, and sanitation and hygiene (WASH) across Tanzania. In Round 3, HDIF welcomes funding applications for pilot and scale-up projects between £500 thousand and £1 million for projects up to three years. Eligibility extends to non-state organizations such as for‐profit businesses; social enterprises; civil society organisations; public-private partnerships; NGOs; charities or societies; faith‐based organizations; community‐based organizations; academic institutions; and research institutes involved in solutions to improve services for the poor. COMESA — Kwame Nkrumah Regional Scientific Awards for Women 2017
The Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) is partnering with the African Union to offer the 2017 Kwame Nkrumah Regional Scientific Awards for Women. The value of the award is US$20 thousand in each scientific sector: (i) life and earth sciences; and (ii) basic science, technology, and innovation. The application process is managed on a regional basis (Central Africa, Northern Africa, Western Africa, Eastern Africa, Southern Africa). There will be two award winners per region. European Commission — IC4WATER
Funded through Horizon 2020, the joint program “IC4WATER” aims to promote transnational and transdisciplinary research on sustainable management of water resources in support of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. The 2017 Joint Call is funded by 13 organizations in 13 countries, including organizations in the following developing and emerging economies: Argentina, Brazil, Egypt, Moldova, South Africa, and Vietnam. Consortia should include a minimum of three eligible partners that request funding from three different participating countries. African Union Commission — Earth Observation Data for Sustainable Development
The African Union Commission (AUC), in partnership with the European Union, will make grants to expand the practical use of Earth Observation (EO) data and services for policymakers, scientists, businesses, and the public across Africa. Grants will be awarded in two categories: (i) water and natural resources; and (ii) marine and coastal areas services. The grants will be allocated across five African sub-regions. Eligibility for grants extends to consortia of African national or regional organizations, research institutions, and universities that have at least five years of experience in implementing large-scale EO projects in subjects that include water and natural resources, and/or marine and coastal zones. Applying institutions should have a regional, continental, or global mandate. Grants will range from €1 million to €2 million. Applicants will be required to provide co-financing up to 20%. UK Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council — Swine and Poultry Research in Asia
The UK’s BBSRC is collaborating with partner organizations in China, the Philippines, and Thailand on research of microbiological diseases in swine and poultry. Proposals should have a UK Principal Investigator, in addition to a Principal Investigator from one or more of the partner countries. BBSRC offers up to £6 million for this research, and partner organizations in China, the Philippines, and Thailand will provide matched funding. Newton Fund — UK-China Agritech Challenge 2017
UK organisations can apply to work with Chinese partners on innovative agricultural solutions in China. Subject areas are precision agriculture; improved efficiency of sustainable agriculture; and processing of agricultural products. Eligible projects need to include one UK business and one UK higher education institute or research council institute eligible for BBSRC funding. Project partners in China need to include one Chinese business and one academic institution. Project costs can be £1 million to £2 million, with grant size not exceeding £1 million in the UK. CRDF Global — Agricultural Research, Ukraine and USA
The 2017 U.S.-Ukraine Agricultural Research Competition welcomes proposals on sustainable farming practices and agricultural biotechnology. Proposals are invited from all areas of the natural sciences and engineering (biology, chemistry, earth sciences, engineering, mathematics, and physics) as they relate to basic and non-commercial applied agricultural research in the two topic areas. French Institute for Development Research — Building Capacity in Research Teams 2017
Through its program JEAI, France’s Institute for Development Research makes grants of up to €50 thousand for periods of three years to build the capacity of research teams in the developing world. Thematic areas include sustainable energy; water resources; climate change; ecosystems and biodiversity; agriculture and food safety; and several others. The supported teams will work closely with IRD. IRD recommends that applicants communicate with its relevant research units before submitting their applications.
