Principle 10 — Grants to Promote Environmental Justice in Latin America

Principle 10 of the Rio Declaration on Environment and Development seeks to ensure that every person has access to information, can participate in the decision-making process, and has access to justice in environmental matters. The Small Sub-Grants Fund offers up to US$2 thousand to registered nonprofit NGOs in Latin America and the Caribbean for actions that address environmental injustice and related violations of human rights.  The deadline for applications (English, Spanish) is 30 September 2016.  Link

University of California at Davis — Horticulture Innovation Lab

With funding provided by the U.S. Agency for International Development, the Horticulture Innovation Lab makes research grants in support of agricultural development. The Lab is soliciting proposals on improving post-harvest handling, storage, and marketing of tomatoes for Burkina Faso (deadline: 12 September 2016). It also calls for research proposals on dried apricots in Tajikistan (deadline: 12 September 2016). Additionally, the Lab invites concept notes for research on integrated animal-horticulture systems, particularly for Cambodia, Nepal, and Rwanda (deadline: 19 September 2016). Proposals led by U.S. university researchers will be given priority for funding.  However, some programs are open to additional participation.  Link

European Technical Centre for Agricultural and Rural Cooperation (CTA) — Enterprises in e-Agriculture

“Pitch AgriHack!” is sponsored by the Technical Centre for Agricultural and Rural Cooperation ACP-EU, in partnership with other organizations. The aim is to help young start-ups in e-agriculture develop business services. The programme is open to start-ups whose owners are ages 18 to 35, and who have a prototype or operating mobile application or ICT service for agriculture in any of the ACP (Africa, Caribbean, and Pacific) countries. There will be a selection to determine which start-ups and teams will attend a boot camp and pitching event in Kenya. Winners for proof of concept will receive grants up to €7.5 thousand; winners for scaling-up will receive grants up to €15 thousand. Energy and Environment Partnership for Southern and East Africa — Project of the Year 2016

The EEP will make an award for “EEP Project of the Year 2016.” Nominations are invited from current or previously completed EEP S&EA projects. EEP will fund travel, accommodation, and associated costs for one representative of the winning project to present at the African Utility Week / Clean Power Africa in Cape Town (May 2017). The deadline for nominations is 15 September 2016. Link

International Polar Foundation — Baillet Latour Antarctica Fellowship

The Baillet Latour Antarctica Fellowship of €150 thousand over two years provides young scientists with the opportunity to conduct research in East Antarctica. The program is open to young researchers in atmospheric sciences, glaciology, and geosciences and microbiology (excluding marine microbiology). Applications are welcome from doctoral researchers and post-doctoral researchers in any country who have completed their PhD within the past 10 years. The application deadline is 15 September 2016. The DO School — Apprenticeship Challenge

The DO School sponsors and funds the Entrepreneurship for Good Program to build the capacity of social entrepreneurs in strategies and methods of promoting on-the-job learning, e.g., apprenticeships.  The Apprenticeship Challenge will accept 20 individuals for a 10-week incubation phase in Brazil, followed by 10 months of implementation in the participants’ home countries.  Applications are invited from talented young adults worldwide regardless of their socioeconomic or educational backgrounds whose interests may include green economy, sustainability, international development, etc.  The course is subsidized; financial support is offered in relation to the specific needs of each applicant. UK Natural Environment Research Council — Research Workshop on Water Quality in India

NERC and the UK’s Engineering & Physical Sciences Research Council invite applications from UK scientists to attend a workshop organised jointly with India’s Department of Science & Technology on the theme of improved water quality in India. The workshop will be held in Delhi (November 2016) to define the scope of a potential new interdisciplinary research programme by the two countries. The UK Government will cover reasonable travel and subsistence expenses for UK participants. The application deadline is 16 September 2016. Link

Southeast Asian Regional Centre for Tropical Biology — Research Proposals 2017

The Southeast Asian Regional Centre for Tropical Biology (SEAMEO BIOTROP) welcomes research proposals in support of its program “Sustaining and Enhancing the Integrity and Productivity of Ecosystems in Southeast Asia.”  The focal areas are ecological restoration, ecological protection and conservation, and ecological sustainability and productivity enhancement. Proposals should have a budget not exceeding Rp100 million over nine months.  The deadline for proposals is 28 September 2016. Link

Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund — Conservation in the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu

The CEPF invites proposals for large and small grants (i.e., under US$20 thousand) to conserve biodiversity in the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu.  The conservation priorities are stated in the announcement. Eligibility for funding extends to NGOs, community groups, universities, private enterprises, and other applicants from civil society.  Government enterprises and institutions may be eligible if they can meet special criteria. The closing date for applications is 30 September 2016. Link

Michigan State University — Graduate Studies in Meteorology for Mali

With funding from the U.S. government, the Borlaug Higher Education Agricultural Research and Development (BHEARD) Program supports long-term training of agricultural and food security researchers and policy advisors at master’s and doctoral levels. The program currently includes scholarships for staff at selected agricultural and meteorological institutions in Mali to pursue graduate studies in meteorology.  Additionally, the program is open to NGO personnel in the Mopti region who are working in subjects of environment and climate.  Applications from women candidates are particularly encouraged.
