Human Development Innovation Fund — Grassroots Projects in Tanzania

The Human Development Innovation Fund (HDIF) is funded by the UK government to create social impact in education, health and water, and sanitation and hygiene (WASH) across Tanzania. In Round 3, HDIF welcomes funding applications for pilot and scale-up projects between £500 thousand and £1 million for projects up to three years.  Eligibility extends to non-state organizations such as for‐profit businesses; social enterprises; civil society organisations; public-private partnerships; NGOs; charities or societies; faith‐based organizations; community‐based organizations; academic institutions; and research institutes involved in solutions to improve services for the poor. Lead applicants should have proof of registration in Tanzania.  The application deadline is 08 September 2017. Link

European Commission — IC4WATER

Funded through Horizon 2020, the joint program “IC4WATER” aims to promote transnational and transdisciplinary research on sustainable management of water resources in support of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. The 2017 Joint Call is funded by 13 organizations in 13 countries, including organizations in the following developing and emerging economies: Argentina, Brazil, Egypt, Moldova, South Africa, and Vietnam. Consortia should include a minimum of three eligible partners that request funding from three different participating countries. The application period for pre-proposals is 30 August through 02 November 2017. Link

U.S. Agency for International Development — Livestock Market Systems in Kenya

USAID in Kenya will make multiple grants (“leader plus associates”) under the Feed the Future program to assist the Kenyan livestock sector, focusing on projects in the northern counties. Project activities should aim for improvements in livestock and related market systems; expanded and diversified market-oriented livelihood opportunities; improved governance and management of range lands and water; drought cycle management; and multiple other objectives during projects of five years. Eligibility for funding is unrestricted. USAID encourages cost-sharing. Funding Opportunity RFA-615-17-000003. The closing date for applications is 17 July 2017. Link

African Union Commission — Earth Observation Data for Sustainable Development

The African Union Commission (AUC), in partnership with the European Union, will make grants to expand the practical use of Earth Observation (EO) data and services for policymakers, scientists, businesses, and the public across Africa. Grants will be awarded in two categories: (i) water and natural resources; and (ii) marine and coastal areas services. The grants will be allocated across five African sub-regions. Eligibility for grants extends to consortia of African national or regional organizations, research institutions, and universities that have at least five years of experience in implementing large-scale EO projects in subjects that include water and natural resources, and/or marine and coastal zones. Applying institutions should have a regional, continental, or global mandate. Grants will range from €1 million to €2 million. Applicants will be required to provide co-financing up to 20%. French Institute for Development Research — Building Capacity in Research Teams 2017

Through its program JEAI, France’s Institute for Development Research makes grants of up to €50 thousand for periods of three years to build the capacity of research teams in the developing world. Thematic areas include sustainable energy; water resources; climate change; ecosystems and biodiversity; agriculture and food safety; and several others. The supported teams will work closely with IRD. IRD recommends that applicants communicate with its relevant research units before submitting their applications. United States–India Science & Technology Endowment Fund — 8th Call for Proposals

The USISTEF announces its 8th competitive call for proposals to commercialize technologies for societal impact. Priority areas include health, education, agriculture, water, and others. Proposals must include at least one partner from each country, India and USA. Funding is up to Rs. 2.5 crores (approximately US$400 thousand) for projects that demonstrate a high potential to be commercial within 2-3 years. The bi-national teams can include incorporated companies; non-incorporated entities; and individuals or consortia from academic, government, and non-government R&D institutions. Nehru Foundation for Development — Earth Care Awards for South Asia 2018

The Earth Care Awards recognize efforts to promote resilience to climate change and reduction of greenhouse gases in the development of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. The awards are co-sponsored by the Nehru Foundation for Development, the JSW Foundation, the TERRE Policy Centre, and The Times of India. The award categories are: community-based mitigation and adaptation in water resources, agriculture, forestry, and other land use; innovations for climate protection; mitigation of greenhouse gases in large enterprises; and leadership in urban climate action. The three winners in each category will each receive a citation and trophy. In the community and innovation categories, the awards also include a cash payment. LAUNCH Nordic — Innovation Challenge 2017

The LAUNCH Nordic Innovation Challenge 2017 focuses on new ways of design and manufacturing for a circular economy. LAUNCH Nordic aims to select ten innovations to be scaled globally through its international partners, network, and accelerator program. The program is open to innovators worldwide. Swedish International Development Agency — Training in Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation for Africa

Sida funds short-term training in selected development topics for participants from developing countries. The Africa program includes a course on Climate Change – Mitigation and Adaptation for participants from Botswana, Mozambique, and Zambia. This round of the training programme has a special focus on water resources for agriculture, water supply, hydropower, etc. Candidates representing government organisations, private companies, and NGOs are encouraged to apply. The training will be provided in three parts, divided between Sweden and Africa. The closing date for applications is 17 July 2017. Link

CRDF Global — Saudi and U.S. Research Collaboration

CRDF Global announces the 2017 Visiting Scholar Fellowship Program at the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) in Saudi Arabia. U.S. researchers will travel to Saudi Arabia for one semester (starting January 2018) to participate in collaborative research with a KAUST research center. The research centers include themes in clean combustion, Red Sea research, solar energy, water desalination and re-use, and several others. The application deadline is 31 August 2017. Link
