Wild Animal Initiative — Challenge Grants

Wild Animal Initiative provides grants for research projects that help us understand and improve the lives of wild animals. Challenge grants researchers exploring critical research questions that will unlock new avenues of wild animal welfare research and are not prioritized by other funders. Grant size varies from US$50 thousand to US$100 thousand. Challenge grants program is open to experienced researchers, but can include financial support for students or other early-career collaborators. Wild Animal Initiative — Discovery Grants

The Wild Animal Initiative provides funding for projects that expand the evidence base of wild animal welfare. Discovery Grants are available to early career researchers (postdocs and PhD students) pursuing a long-term research career in wild animal welfare and established researchers who seek to expand their research portfolio to include wild animal welfare. Grant size varies from US$10 thousand to US$50 thousand. Projects must be led by a principal investigator affiliated with a university or other research institution. American Museum of Natural History — Ornithology Research

The Frank M. Chapman Memorial Fund supports ornithological research anywhere in the world. Chapman Research Grants are small short-term awards for research that are available to graduate students for expenses associated with projects primarily focused on the systematics and evolutionary biology of birds. Association of Avian Veterinarians — Wild Bird Health Fund 2025

The Association of Avian Veterinarians seeks research projects addressing wild bird health. Projects of interest include epidemiology of disease in wild populations, ecotoxicology, diagnostic testing and treatment of wild birds, and conservation medicine. Smithsonian.com — Annual Photo Contest 2024

Smithsonian.com accepts submissions from photographers worldwide in the theme of “Natural World,” among other categories. The Grand Prize is US$2,500 and the winners in each category will receive US$500 each. The deadline for submissions is 02 December 2024. Submit your photos

World Wildlife Fund — Faculty Fellowship

The World Wildlife Fund (WWF), through the Russell E. Train Education for Nature Program (EFN), offers fellowship opportunities to support university faculty members who are affiliated with or currently employed at African, Asian, and Latin American universities. The fellowship is offered to enable faculty members to pursue their PhD. Applicants from eligible countries can apply for three years of study, with funding of up to US$30 thousand per year. Trust for Sustainable Living — International Schools Essay Competition

Every year, the essay competition focuses on a different global sustainability challenge. This year’s theme is Eco-Anxiety. Participating students are invited to create a piece of artwork, music, video, poem, essay, letter, or story that explores moving from feelings of eco-anxiety to eco-action & empowerment. The Grand Prize trophy winner will receive a free international trip to a TSL Summit, including £1000 spending money. Schools have to register a Teacher Champion to participate in the competition. Earth Journalism Network — Investigative Story Grant

The Earth Journalism Network (EJN) makes reporting grants to Indigenous and tribal journalists globally to support the production of investigative reporting on environmental and climate issues. EJN expects to award up to 5-6 grants of up to US$3,000 each. Applicants must self-identify as Indigenous or belonging to a tribe and will be asked to provide details on their Indigenous or tribal affiliations in the application. Morris Animal Foundation — Wildlife Health (Reptiles and Amphibians)

The Morris Animal Foundation supports research that advances the health and welfare of reptiles and amphibians. The Foundation invites proposals in three categories: Established Investigator, First Award, & Pilot Study Awards. The maximum duration of an Established Investigator award is 36 months. There is no limit to the budget request, however, the average award is expected to be US$100 thousand. The maximum duration of a Pilot Study award is 12 months, and the total budget cannot exceed $20,000. Commonwealth Foundation — Grants for Civil Society in Commonwealth Countries

The Commonwealth Foundation makes grants to civil society organizations in Commonwealth countries to support participatory governance. (Note: This could include participatory governance related to the management of forests, wildlife, water supplies, and other subjects in natural resources and the environment.) The total grant amount requested must be between £15 thousand and £30 thousand per year for a maximum of two years. A list of eligible countries is included in the call.
