The Flemish Inter-University Council (VLIR-UOS) invites applications for Short Initiative projects that aim to build and deepen academic/scientific collaborations among diverse teams of academics and researchers. Short Initiatives focus on a sustainable development challenge. The objective is to strengthen research and educational capacities of higher education and science institutions in partner countries in Latin America, Africa and Southeastern Asia. The Commonwealth Secretary-General — Global Ocean Competition
The Commonwealth Secretary-General and the Commonwealth Youth Climate Change Network (CYCN) launch a global competition to inspire young people to take action on oceans. The Youth Action Challenge will award three young activists with £1,000 each for their work towards the realization of conserving and sustainably using oceans, seas and marine resources. Wild Animal Initiative — Fellowship Program
Wild Animal Initiative invites early-career scientists to apply to a fellowship program. Fellowships are offered to individuals to conduct wild animal welfare research that is explicitly focused on combining animal welfare and the study of wild animals. Wild Animal Initiative offers a stipend of up to US$60 thousand per year for salary and living expenses. Eligible candidates can request an additional allowance of up to US$25 thousand per year for field work, consumables and other research related costs. Applicants must have a PhD or be a full-time graduate student expecting to graduate within 3 months of application. Applications must be received by 01 January 2023. Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund — Biodiversity Conservation in the Mountains of Central Asia
The Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund (CEPF) invites applications for large grants to promote biodiversity conservation in the Mountains of Central Asia (Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan). Large grants range from US$50 thousand to US$150 thousand. Project proposals should be built on biodiversity conservation as a fundamental component. The call is open to NGOs, community groups, cultural organizations, women’s groups, private companies and civil society organizations. International organizations are encouraged to involve local organizations or communities as project partners. Expressions of interest have to be submitted by 10 January 2023. Details
German Federal Environmental Foundation — PhD Fellowships
The German Federal Environmental Foundation (DBU) offers 60 research fellowships per year to young scientists in Germany and internationally across all disciplines of environmental protection. The funding period is 36 months with a monthly stipend of €1,500. DBU welcomes subjects of international importance, although the work has to be done mainly in Germany, and with a clear reference to the German environmental situation. U.S. National Marine Fisheries Service — Marine Turtle Management and Conservation Program Pacific Islands
The International Marine Turtle Management and Conservation Program supports conservation, protection, or management actions supporting recovery of endangered sea turtle species occurring within the Pacific Islands Region. The program funds internationally-based projects to protect conserve western Pacific leatherback sea turtles occurring in Indonesia and Solomon Islands, and sea turtle management and conservation projects within Southeast Asia (Vietnam, Philippines, or Indonesia) and Japan with focus on fishery bycatch, nesting beach monitoring, poaching reduction, and/or the illegal sea turtle wildlife trade. Proposals between US$10 thousand and US$100 thousand per project year will be funded. Projects may apply for up to three years in length. Eligible applicants are institutions of higher education, nonprofits, commercial organizations, foreign institutions, foreign organizations, and governments. Earth Journalism Network — Stop Spillover Media Grants
The Earth Journalism Network (EJN) offers grants to media organizations to support capacity-building activities for media and journalists related to understanding and preventing zoonotic viral spillover. EJN is particularly interested in projects that help journalists use data and the latest scientific research in their reporting. Applications are open to traditional news media, broadcast media, development media, new media and independent media outlets from the following countries: Liberia, Sierra Leone, Côte d’Ivoire, Bangladesh, Cambodia and Vietnam. United States Agency for International Development — Conservation in Madagascar
The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) seeks applications from qualified entities to reduce threats to biodiversity and improve conservation; develop economic opportunities for the poor; and improve environmental governance in Madagascar. USAID intends to award up to 3 awards of approximately US$25 million for terrestrial activities and US$15 million for marine activities. Eligibility is not restricted. USAID encourages applications from local organizations. The closing date for applications is 14 November 2022. More information
German Academic Exchange Service — Project-based Personnel Exchange Program with India
The ’Project-based Personnel Exchange Program’ (PPP) is a bilateral research promotion program to strengthen the collaboration between Indian and German research groups, which are working jointly on a particular scientific project. Financial support is available to support exchange visits to the partner institution and short term stays of scientists and doctoral students. The program is open to academics in the disciplines of agricultural sciences, veterinary medicine, forestry, medicine, life sciences, animal sciences, and others. University professors, scientists/researchers and post-doctoral researchers from German and Indian universities and those in permanent positions at public funded research institutes are eligible to apply.
